Recover Corrupted Files?

It appears my D:\ has become corrupted. I don't know what's wrong with it but I can nolonger write or read to the drive.

The directory shows the names of my files and folders but they are mostly corrupted with extra alphanumeric characters in them.

The root directory seems to be limited to 8-character file names but the sub-directory files are normal length.

I can't read any files or copy them anywhere. Are there any utilities out there that might be able to help me retrieve and/or repair files?

This is a 3GB harddrive from a long time ago but I used it to backup important files. It's formatted FAT32 and there are no partitions. Anyone have any ideas what I could do?

Okay, I'm probably screwed. I just had the disk redetected by the bios. It might have detected with the wrong number of sectors as it originally was because now Windows won't even read the disk anymore. Device Manager confirms it's there (and working( but it doesn't show up in My Computer). If I hit D:\ in the command prompt, the computer crashes.

Download the MFG's diagonstic disk for that drive and check the drive for problems.

It sounds like a goner to me. :(
