Recording games to

With this particular drive running via USB2 you should be able to hit 35-42MB/s writes. I don't know what the requirements are for your particular app, but you could write multiple compressed HD streams to the drive with that.

fraps is an app which sits on top of the video driver which records your games, it doesn't need a hardware device for capture. The Hauppague is mostly for PS3, Xbox & Wii where you can't just install an app like fraps.

It depends on your card. If you have a current generation card of decent horsepower, it can be as little as just 10% or less. If you have an older card, it can be significant to crushing. Fraps has many options, so you can cut down the fps of the movie, or the quality recorded.

Yes, you're correct...

I do know what fraps is and its quite obvious that its very taxing (video capturing/compression doesn't come free) and as I said earlier, a HDD wont fix it and certainly not a USB connected one due to the nature of USB, so my conclusion still stands. The card has nothing to do with it since fraps a software solution and you cannot use hardware acceleration with realtime video (at least in fraps).

What I used was two 1TB drives in RAID 0. It worked perfect for Fraps. I was recording 1920x1200 at 30FPS no problem. And at that resolution you consume massive amounts of space when recording. Now the old FRAPS use to lock your frame rate to the recording speed, but about 2 years ago they made it so that recording frame rate is independent of the screens frame rate.

Also having the two drives in RAID 0 came in handy when editing, as I could skip around the video quite easily. If I put the video on a single drive it would stutter when trying to skip around the timeline.

I use Sony Vegas Movie Studio. Great software for ~$100. And I use Paint.NET for image editing (like making PNG's for overlays...use PNG for the alpha)
 
Remember that FRAPs doesn't use compression, so the files are huge. Especially as the resolution increases.
