It's time for me to upgrade my B router and I've been looking at two routers, the Linksys WRT54GL and the D-Link DIR-655. I use my router for my two laptops, another desktop, and xbox live. Would flashing the Linksys router with DD-WRT make it just as good as the D-Link just without the Gigabit port?
 
I was reading that and that's why I'm questioning this. I thought that the Linksys router flashed with DD-WRT would be just as good as any of those top routers just without the Gigabit port. And sorry for the typo in my title don't know how I pulled that off lol :D
 
Do you have a spare computer you could use as a router?

I would flash the WRT54 with DD-WRT and see how that goes.
 
Flashing the WRT54G/L/S/whatever with DD-WRT allows you to squeeze a little more performance out of the aging platform and adds a whole bunch of features. It will not bring it up to the level of performance you will see with the DIR-655 or any other modern enthusiast router platform. If you are between those two - please do yourself a favor and put down a little more for the DIR-655. :)

Depends which Linksys router you're talking about...as their newer ones..such as the 300 and 600 models...are powerful. But if you're talking about their old wrt54g models that were the popular ones several years ago...no...not even with DD-WRT can they stand a whisker of a chance against the more powerful generation models that have come out since. DD-WRT gives the old wrt54g a little better performance than stock Linksys firmware. But it still comes down to horsepower..what's under the hood of the router..CPU and RAM.
 
From my current experience and previous experience with the older model (DGL-4300), I would recommend the DLink DGL-4500.

High performance. Gigabit Ports. Dual-Band N Wireless. Gamefuel optimization for online gaming. Oh, and the cool OLED screen :)

I replaced my DGL-4300 with one last week and could not be happier.
