I'd use search but it seems to still be down. I'm curious if anyone has come across any good "bang for the buck" ram for the MSI K7D. I know I can run unreg'd ram in the first two banks but it sometimes seems hit or miss which ram will work.

Looking to go with about a gig of ram or so.

Get yourself some high quality PC2700 RAM, that should give you some headroom should you want to overclock. However, I'm not entirely convince of the argument of going for non-registered DIMMs as the spec clearly requires the registered stuff, but will work with non-registered ones also... ;)
 
I have no problem with going with Reg'd ram. I guess I was just looking for a cheaper solution. What brands are most folks finding the good value in now days?
 
I'm running 512 meg of Kingston value ram in two of my folding Duallies.
Thats about a cheap as they come.

2 256mb Crucial PC 2700 unregistered worked fine in mine til the board died. (Darn refurb.) BTW RAM is still good, just the board gave me a raspberry and refused to turn on after having it off for 2 days. Had been running fine for several months(24/7), but it was so hot in my room one day I had to have a break from the heat and the noise of 4 computers running.

Edit: gah just noticed I said Corsair when I meant Crucial. Sorry about that.
 
I built mine early on, and at the time most guys were using Crucial. Mine has four sticks of 256mb registered ECC. If you use all the slots, it needs to be registered ECC. I set mine to "check only" in the bios, and lowered the CAS latency by one clock cycle...maybe this was on an Abit. I can't remember because I had this ram left over from a fried Abit KG7-Raid, so it is a few years old. However, it has been great ram with zero problems.

Plus, Crucial may be the best company to deal with that is involved in our hobby. They rma quick and hassle free, and they really know the ins-and-outs of their product. I once fried a stick of Crucial through carelessness, and they immediately sent a replacement stick, although I admitted fault to them. I called to buy a stick, but they insisted on sending it for free. Beat that!

I bought it direct from them online. Shipping was free and fast...very, very fast.
 
I'm using two sticks of Kingston 512MB ECC REG PC2100 DDR-SDRAM with no problems.


Not overclocking, ecc is currently turned off in bios.

That's because no matter what level of ECC you're using, there's performance penalty attached to it due to the additional checks and corrections. ;)
 
Hmm, I was aware of a performance penality, but didn't see it as enough of an issue to warrent not using ECC. /me goes to benchy both ways
