Hello, I'm looking for some help on a new RAID card for a server. Currently I have an Adaptec 2405 in RAID 10. I use this server to run about 5 VMs. I use Hitachi Ultrastar HGST (HDS723020ALA640) 2TB 64mb cache 7200RPM HDs.
I wanted to update this to a newer card, for one because I want to add 2 more drives, this is only a 4 port internal and I need a 8 port internal. This doesn't have a BBU. I would rather my new one be able to use one, & hopefully see some performance gains. Also I use ESXi, that requires hardware RAID.
So I also have a Samsung 850 Pro 256GB SSD laying around. I was wanting to add 2 more HDs to the array & try to use the SSD as a cache possibly for some improvements. I believe I was read this is possible with certain cards. If anyone can explain what I need to do to set that up.
What is the best Read/Write I should be able to get out of 7200RPM drives in RAID 10?
I was looking at LSI cards as benchmarks for them look much better than the Adaptecs. I also see that the IBMs & Dell clones are much cheaper & can be flashed to LSI firmware, correct?
Not sure which will give me what I want without wasting money. Not sure if the extra RAM caches on the IBMs or worth it for 7200RPM drives.
M5014 vs M5015 vs M5016. Also looked at Dell H810. Any opinions on which of these would be the best for me. Thanks!
