Recommended Low-Mid Digitals?

Okay, so I've got need for a beater camera for Blizzcon. I define beater as "boy, I'll be pissed off if I lose it, but I won't go into cardiac arrest." I won't waste time on my existing setup other than to say it's a hodge-podge of mid-80's Canon base and lenses from here till next year, and impossible to travel with. (And that I would die if it got damaged or lost.)

So, what's the current hot pick in the low to mid (Sub-$500ish) category? I see lots of "OMG MEGAPIXELS MEGAPIXELS MEGAPIXELS" models. I want something that is going to be purely for beater duty. Meaning, quick clean shots 95% of the time with wide variations in lighting and distance. I also want at least half decent software with it, meaning something besides Google Picasa (FEH!) but please gods no Kodak EasyShare (install drivers to access camera!) An easy to remove memory card would be a definite bonus, as long as the camera doesn't get crabby about files disappearing from the memory card.

So hit me; what do you folks recommend for a beater?

Canon G9, or wait for the new announcement of the G10. Awesome camera, does RAW, and plenty of manual controls, with one of the best IQ available with a P.&S.

Well, looked at the G9.. and. Uh. Looking for something a bit more basic, I think. I don't really have a use or want for a hot shoe or lenses - trying to move downmarket here. (If I replace my 35mm setup, I'll be going DSLR.) Jeez, had no idea digitals had gotten so cheap.

So what about lower than the G9? Definitely would love RAW if I can get it, but gotta lose all those higher end goodies. :)
