So I want to take the plunge and try my hand at Linux. I been shopping around and it seems that the book are way to basic: Linux for dummies or way to complex The Linux Bible. I was looking for a book splits the middle ground, program installation, compiling of binaries, and setting up of web services, ect.

Thanks for taking a shot all recommendations welcome.

Best bet is to pick a distribution, and start going apeshit with reading the docs. Gentoo would be the recommended distro, although I do admit their installation docs get a little confusing at times. However, IMHO, their forums are top notch when it comes to getting things resolved. With the help of their forums, I've solved a lot of problems I've had with my install of it, from minor annoying things to some relatively major stuff...all without asking a question!
