Recommended audio codecs?

Basically what I am looking for is a codec or DSP plugin for windows that utilizes my 5.1 setup to the best extent. Right whether its itunes, WMP or any other player its sounds like its 2.1. I have checked all my speakers and all produce sound, but the Front right and left seem to be the loudest. Anything out there that will make my speakers sound better?

Dolby Digital is simply a transport mechanism. No quality improvement.

The ATSurround Processor dsp for Foobar is also pretty cool.

It should be pointed out that just because you HAVE 5 speakers does not mean that using them is the right thing sound wise to do. Since most music is NOT recorded and master with 5.1 in mind using a DSP to upmix is not really a good thing. Sure its neat and all but the sound IMHO tends to be off.

5.1 is great for audio recorded and mastered with it in mind.
