I'm looking for 64GB or more to carry in my pocket. Can anyone recommend a good portable ssd (If they are out) or a flash drive that will work on old and new systems (Something that doesn't require high power usb)?

No flash drive requires high power. USB3 are just faster. USB3 will work on USB2.0 systems, should work on USB1.1.
Basically performance depends on internal build, storage format (FAT32M, XFAT, or NFS?). "FAT" Format has size limitations, i forget exactly what.
Prices are all over the place, most people have luck with a brand till they do not..
Transcend Jetflash 64 gb USB2.0 one is on sale for next few hours for $30 shipped. Or you can spend a $100 or more.
I caught Team flash drives on sale from newegg, these are my prefference. A USB3.0 is perhaps more future compatible.
Team 64 gb are $40 for USB2.0, $70 for USB3.0.
For transferring files 3.0 might be a big plus, might not matter, depends on the files.

If you get a 64 GB SSD and a SATA2 or SATA3 external HDD case you are equivalent, an SSD will/should work fine off one USB2.0 PLUG Power wise. I do not know if there are any conflicts with software. SSDs use TRIM for maintanence, HDDs use defragmentation.

That is not true. I have a 64GB stick that consistently pops up "exceeded power and disabled" messages in 5 or 6 different machines and works fine in others. There are devices which exceed the power draw and the port/driver is smart enough to disable the device rather than damage the hardware. Especially if you are running on a hub (internal or external) with unpowered ports you might not have the 500ma available or your device may be drawing more.

I was asking for myself. I've been thinking about moving my disaster recovery system from a flash drive to an 830 in an enclosure. It wouldn't leave the house.

Then an 830 in a USB3 enclosure (get one without an NEC USB3 chip) would be fastest.

Getting an enclosure with a NEC USB3 (-to-SATA bridge) chip could be difficult. The chip supposedly exists (NEC uPD720230) but all I can find w/Google are announcements/press-releases from NEC/Renesas, but not a single product that uses it. Which enclosures were you referring to? (Or, maybe they're all embarrassed.:))

I picked up 2 different cheap enclosures from dealextreme that had them and had abysmal performance. Just something to stick some 500gb wd 2.5" blues into. Picked up some replacement Vantec units for some more $$$ and got almost SATA performance out of them.

I still think this would be a waste. USB3 just isn't fast enough to feed an 830. Best to keep that on SATA3 and get a less expensive SSD for a usb3.0 enclosure. There are zillions of them out there with performance on par with usb 3.0.
 
I'd think a 1.8" ssd would be ideal, unfortunately they must all be made of gold as they are all Sata II yet command $2 US per GB. :(

830 deals have been insane lately. Newegg had the 64GB for $65 a few days ago. At that price, why not go 830 just for the reliability?

I don't want an SSD in my pocket unless it fits and it doesn't, so we are moving on.

I don't know if you would consider this as I don't know who is selling it now (newegg is oos) but it is both SATA2 and USB3 in a form factor not much larger than a standard SSD.

Our ssd+enclosure posts are 100% on-topic for a thread titled "Portable SSD or Flash Drive."

Hardforum exists for discussion. It is not a question answering service. OP's are not allowed to police their threads telling people not to post on-topic material just because it doesn't serve their personal needs.

I can play the bold, underline, large front game too. Weird... Almost looks like in the first line of the first post it had details that qualify the thread and the discussion to be pocket size.

But maybe you're right, next time I'll post my entire post into the title as well to ensure that you don't skip over or miss anything.
