Recommendations on proxy servers/another solution to my problem?

I do a lot of travel throughout the world... The problem I’m running in to is some of the applications I want to use while I’m on the road require that I have an IP that is based in America.

I figure a proxy server should do the trick -- filter my “mobile” (in other words, constantly changing based on what hotel I’m in) Internet connection through my Internet connection at my house.

Does anyone know of a good free windows based proxy server, or does anyone have a better idea on how I can remedy this problem?

If possible I’d like to find a solution that I can run in windows. I’m not much of a linux man myself and don’t know if I could tackle the task of building and operating a linux box (IE: without introducing new security risks on my network due to my lack of linux knowledge).

Look into the Steganos Internet Anonym Pro software. It will allow you to specify which countries you want to recieve an IP from (including the US). The only problem is that it only works with port 80, or HTTP ports meaning that only programs you use in your browser (IE or Firefox) will work. If your programs have a proxy option in them, you will have to find another method.
 
How about a different angle...maybe setting up a VPN host in the States..which you VPN to...then shoot out?
 
Squid on an extra box running linux would do the trick, but keeping it secure may be a task.

VPN would be easier, as YeOld suggested.

thats the way I'd do it... simple and bullet proof.

Definitely the safest way.

Another option would just be to set up Remote Desktop on your box in the US, remote in and run the programs on the machine in the US. I'd change it off of the default port of 3389 though.
