Looking for off-the-shelf brand fanless mini pc NOT for gaming but general internet activity, watching streaming videos, some minor video editing. Will install Linux probably Ubuntu. Small form factor *not* a mini tower or similar. What are the general recommendations? Must have hdmi output. Don't want to spend a lot on this - like under $400. thanks

Basically Intel NUC or any of the NUC like clones. Just about everyone makes one, Zotac, Gigabyte, MSI, etc.

They usually have a whole range of CPUs ranging from Pentiums up to i7's. You add your own ram and a small SSD and away you go! They are pretty price/performance competitive all things considered.

atmartens, if we go there then I think these dual core mobile Broadwell Celeron based machines will spank that AMD http://a.co/iyFdhaA http://a.co/gNF2QGE http://a.co/ewedZWI http://a.co/eeMubEv (this is the one I have).

By now, Apollo Lake chips are getting close to the 3215U but still not and those are some of fastest Atom chips (which AMD tries to compete with) out there. Of course, the 3215U is much higher TDP wise but on a desktop, really, a 15W chip is not a big deal.
