Asking in the mobo section would be a smart idea. Anyway, what does this server need to do? what type of expansion slot(s) do you need: PCI-X, PCIe? Single or multi-socket. How much are you willing to spend?
price range on hardware alone would be about 2000. yeah i just realized i was reading the wrong forums. but what about CPU? xenon better then the dual core chips?
What sort of things will you be using the server for? If it's just a basic workstation server type thing then maybe you should stick with something simple but if you're looking for a /gaming machine type deal maybe you could give a look into the ASUS P5WDG2-WS since it has a few pci-x slots as well as 2x pci-e slots. The newer revisions of this motherboard, along with a handful of other 975x motherboards should also support conroe (granted they will have to be revs that have the newer vrm) but I'd think a conroe (maybe kensfield?) + this board + some 15k scsi + sli could make for a KILLER workstation/gaming rig.
But then again, for basic server needs i'm sure anything like a dell poweredge 2300 would be plenty = )
sounds good. thanx for the recommendation i will have to look into the pricing of them. what would a server need a pci-e slot for? not like i'm going to be putting a top of the line video card in it. as you can tell i'm new to the server stuff. and it will be used as a application server/gaming server. application such as msql during work hours.
