I am looking to either buy or build a 4-8 bay rackmount bo that i can use with ISCSI, i have looked at a few qnap ones on ebay but would like to ask for some other recommendations for some other brands.

I don't want to go over 1000$ with drives.

I did price out a box using openfiler or free nas a supermicro dualcore atom board with 2 gigs ram and 4 bay case. BUT i also found a few units on ebay for 650$ with out drives.

Thoughts ?

I need something reliable but within budget.

Should i build or buy ?

The only problem i had with 8 drives is the raid cards are expensive like 300$ and up :(

QNAP is a good choice, if I'm not mistaken their latest firmware allows the use of RAID10. My only gripe is the lack of an additional network port so you can have the redundancy of two ports for iSCSI (isolated from regular traffic) and one port for management/general use.

I was thinking raid 5 witch gives me 3 drives raided together so 4 2tb drives and one is the swap i understand. The unit is a TS-410U for about $645 i could throw in 4 2tb drives.

THe one that im looking at has 2 gigabit ports and has 4 drives and supports up to 3tb sata drives..

For capacity RAID5 is a good choice. That's how I run mine, storage only RAID5; works well.

I need security and reliability :) i just ordered 6 500gig sata drives this afternoon. Been getting email;s all week stating my raid drive 3 is failing :( FML

so im rebuilding the whole server with 6 500's and doing a raid 5 setup.

IF i have it my way ill have one of these qnap unit's then ill be buying another so in total of 2 :) * one at a time tho *

One idea: instead of raid5/qnap (or whatever), go with a 6-drive raidz1 with something like freenas v8 or the new zfsguru. Same basic idea, but allows you to do snapshots, automatically detect and remap failing sectors, etc...

the 6 500's is for my virtual server running 2008r2, not my storage :)

should have put this down.
