The wife wants to go with a new TV (Lucky!). We currently have a Toshiba 52" 720P DLP (52HM84) and are looking to go 52"+ 1080P LCD. NewEgg has some ridiculous deals but I am not too sure what exactly to look for as most of the 1080P have similiar stats (resolution, contrast, inputs, price, etc..)

Here's a fantastic deal: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889101138

Curious if anyone had some input?

how much are you looking to spend, there are a lot of great tvs out there. Im partial to the Sony XBR brand, recommend that if you can pay up for it.

Id stay as far away from tigerdirect as possible, they are over priced, shit support and shit return policy. I buy all my home electronics from here. http://www.abt.com/

You can talk them down in price, you can also talk down Bestbuy in price to, most people dont know this.

BB? Really?

I typically do NewEgg but 52" LCD Sony for $1399 appears to be about the cheapest I've found.

My main input is avoid Sharp. I spent a lot of time in store looking at screens. Sharp have the worse viewing angle fade of any LCDs I have seen, even worse than random no name LCDs.

I would say buy local with a return policy. It is worth small extra costs. I bought mine at local best buy. They insist on opening the box and inspecting the panel with you before you take it home and then they have a no hassle full refund policy if you have an issue.

I would not mail order on something like this.

The wife and I really like the KDL-52W4100. However, buying locally is not my thing. I want to choke my balls off whenever I even walk into BB. The buying experience is absolutely horrible. Honestly, I'd rather deal with NewEgg as I've NEVER EVER had a problem.

To me, needing to have a product shipped to me, and having to ship it back if there is an issue is problem enough. Dell has an excellent return policy (that I have used,) but it is still a huge PITA to use. My local futureshop/BB has similar policy but it has been a pleasure to use. I drive back, drop off the bad product and get the new one. Contrast with spending time on the phone, arranging exchange (or even more hassle - refund) then arranging shipping to send, pickup etc...

I have no problem with sales staff ever. Them: "Do you need help?" Me: "No". Then they go away. Where's the problem?

Anyway, to each his own. I use mail order for items with low worries of shipping breakage, low chance of defects needing return (books, movies etc..), but on electronics. I choose local B&M for a variety of reasons.

The mail order is an issue due to size but I guess you haven't went to a BB in NYC. :)

Either or, that Sony I mentioned above is at BB so I am going to at least look at it. I am not a big SONY fan but it got very good reviews.

Best picture lcd = samsung 52a750 or if you can afford it 55a950 led lcd

I have a DLP now and I am not happy with the picture. Also, it's really big even though I have a large living room.

The samsung LN52a550 goes for about $1200 dollars on sale. It's a good 52in 1080p entry model tv, but if you want 120hz then the LN52a650 goes for about $1800

If you care about these things. The LN52a550 is subject to a samsung Panel lotto. You get either a Samsung/AUO/CMO panel all with slightly different characteristics...

Wait.

If you have a usable TV, keep using it until it dies. TV technology is still improving quickly. If you can wait another 3-4 years, you'll be glad you did. Well, unless you have a lot of money you want to crap away.

And if 3-4 years from then there will be new technology on the horizon. By that logic he would be waiting forever.

Not necessarily. Most new technologies ramp up quickly and then plateau. Analog TVs plateaued about 30 years ago and have changed little since. PCs somewhat plateaued in the late 90s. We are still in the steep part of the curve for HDTV so waiting a little can get you a lot.

As others have indicated, buy someplace with an easy return policy. (For example, last I heard, NOT New Egg for LCDs...)

You don't want to get stuck with a TV that has bad pixels, bad uniformity, bad etc., that drives you nuts, but which the manufacturer and store might think are just fine...

just a question guys, is it really safe to buy tv's online? my brother works for ups and he says hell never us ups if he were to buy tv's.

Looked at a few of the Samsungs. Way too much glare and the extra brightness loses some detail for me.

honestly, for anything below a samsung 950, I'd take a panasonic or pioneer plasma!

And that Samsung is even more problematic than many other LCDs with regard to viewing angles...

Especially for a living room situation, where most people will see the TV from some sort of angle, I really have to agree that plasma is the way to go...

(Or at least the favored starting place in the decision process.)
