Recommendation to replace GeForce3

Ok, I've decided it's time to upgrade from my old GeForce3 Ti200. I just wanna be able to play games with good performance. Max resolution I ever go to is 1024x768. I was looking at the Radeon line, but my brother put a 9600 in his PC and had nothing but problems with it. I'd rather not spend any more than $250, but am willing to go to $300. Any recommendations are appreciated. Here's my basic system specs:

AthlonXP 1700+
512MB PC2100 DDR
Asus A7V266
Soundblaster Audigy

You're going to be hitting a barrier with that slow CPU. You could get a 6800 Ultra but your CPU will really be holding you back. Just save up and upgrade your entire system.

At 1024x768 you will be very CPU limited, but you would still get a decent performance boost from a 6800NU.

My board will support up to the 2600+, but only a 266FSB. That's a cheap upgrade. Do you think there will be a difference that noticeable if I do that too? Thanks

I would imagine so, yes. You might consider buying a used motherboard supporting a higher FSB. But before you do that, give OC'ing a go on your 1700+.

With your $300 budget limit, I would go with a 6800. It performs much better than the last gen of graphics cards.
