I would like to upgrade to a 64bit system. I have a good case/power supply and 2GB ram on my Gigabyte GA-8KNXP ver1 motherboard. This mb is an AGP board so I would like to move up to PCI Express and get a new video card. I would like to just remove the old mb and pop in a new one that supports a 64bit cpu, get a new video card, and more RAM, if that is the right way to go.

I would appreciate any help you can provide on a mb recommendation.

Regards

Phil

At a minimum you'll need a new video card, memory, CPU and motherboard. You may even need a new power supply depending on how old your current power supply is. Also if you are still using PATA/EIDE hard drives, you may want to upgrade those. Many of the newer boards don't have much in the way of EIDE ports. Most boards give you one port if you are lucky. (Or unlikely depending on how you look at it.) Some motherboards don't support PATA/EIDE devices natively via the chipset and rely on a slow performing JMicron or similar controller chip.

That was a good board with a 875P intel chipset. But its terribly outdated, there are no socket 478 cpu's that support 64 bit. So you will have to do everything Dan_D mentioned in the above post.

You will find some good help in the hardware section. And there are people that hang out there that are great at helping people put together systems depending on the what the pc is going to be used for, and with what budget you have available to you.
