Hey guys,

I need to choose a thin and light for on location / event photography
(Example: Sports or Event photographer doing quick crops / resizing during downtime)

My needs are
Light as possible
Screen Big enough to do basic editing and of decent quality (13" seems to be the best)
No Atom
Battery life exceeding 5 hours
Don't need an optical drive
Dedicated Graphics if possible.
Price does matter but a perfect laptop would be > than need for lower price

The 3 laptops i've look at so far are

Asus ul30vt (not officially announced for the US yet but confirmed by an Asus rep)
HP d3v
Macbook Pro 13"

Are there any other ones that you guys would recommend that might be better than these choices? I like the Asus for the battery life and the switchable graphics. The HP might be the cheapest, and the Macbook the fastest processor but is about a pound heavier than the Asus.

based off the models listed get the mac, not because I love macs, but because it has a better panel than the dv3 and not sure about the Asus panel.

If you want to get a little closer to what the image actually looks like, a better panel is kind of useful and it is where many notebook makers skimp.

That said, as far as I know even the macbook pro 13 does not have a rgb backlit panel.

the newer dell studio xps line has options for that panel (not sure if it is available in 13" size though)

and the hp envy 13 has a 13.3 rgb backlit display ~ 400 nit display brightness, so that is probably the best 13" panel out on the market now on notebooks.

But it is also much more expensive than the entry mbp 13" models so, yeah.

Anyone know 13" notebooks alternatives with superior panels please list them, people wanting to use them for some photo work could benefit.

Thanks for the info so far.

Yeah it's hard to get good real use information on laptop panels. A lot of time the advertising is different from the real specs and the real specs are not so easy to find. The macbook air is off my list since i can't really upgrade the ram and very hard to find a big hd that fits in it.
Envy 13 is at top of the list but would like a cheaper solution if at all possible.

I ended up going with the 15" mbp after using the 13" for a month or so. I loved the 13" but really wanted a bigger screen and resolution for photography work as well as other things.
That being said the screen on the 13" is great, and I can't tell any difference between the 15" and 13" as far as screen quality.
