Dell---> replace video card. Problem solved.

Another alternative is a cheap 3600+ Brisbane and AM2 motherboard, add some RAM and you're in business.

Do you have a case/power supply?

The best deals you're going to find are going to be the brick and mortar shops. The base prices are generally good, but the rebates are where you'll make like a bandit. I might look around in your local store to see what you can get.

I'd go with an emachines or Gateway, if you can.

Ya, thats what I'm thinkin, a litte better build emachine. Make sure it has a pcie slot too!
If you see a nice Gateway then ya, but I belive you might get more for your dollar with the emachine. $500 for a pc sounds cool, I would love to get one for my bed room. Have you thought about a nice laptop too? I notice they have been having real nice sales on them at BestBuy and CompUSA. Trick is you got to look at them on Sunday morning and buy it quick. If you wait till the middle of the week the real good deals are sold out. I love my pc but I do enjoy my wifes laptop too, just hard to pry it away from her. :D

give them 50.00 and have them file for the rebate :D

you can use this specification and search locally (cc,bb, c/usa, etc...) for no shipping.

he wants to use his video card. you can't upograde on the system you linked.

I would go with Gateway or Compaq from CC or Best Buy. They have deals below or ~$500.

I was just scoping out DELLs last night, and lo-and-behold they really aren't the cheapest anymore, and they aren't throwing in those LCD monitors as liberaly as they used to.

doesn't dell have a scratch and dent section for some open box but new stuff essentially? I remember some people getting laptops and being very happy in my friends office.

all the people above are nuts.

www.velocitymicro.com

edit: in retrospect, they dont exactly do $500 computers. for that price, you wouldn't be getting too too ripped off by companies like dell

Yes it is true we are "nuts" but he seems to be asking whats a good $500 pc. I go to the VM link and the cheapest I see is $800. Ok here we go ready, $800 - $500 = $300
Dam $300 extra, I would do this then if I had that extra $$ ,http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8208334&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat103700050068&id=1167444938260ya get more RAM, bigger HD and faster CPU for the extra cash. Plus he could pop in his vid card. Really for the extra hit it really might be better to spend a few extra and at least get a little better machine for the future. Hopefully you can convince your parents in that extra hit. Then again if you can't and are just getting the $500 go for a top of the line emachine, Try to get the most for your money.

AMD system.

Gateway would have been another option, but nothing at your price range at the moment. For some reason though, Gateway seems to have th emost RAM and largest HDs configured (as of late) so it may be worth a 2nd look.

look at Circuit City for Gateway deals.

If you can get the low-powered AMD X2 chips....nice!

alright looks like im going to grab the refurb gateway of tiger direct reasons why i choose the gateway
1. 500 before shipping
2. zero tax ordered off line
3. come with windows xp no vista (i already have a brand new copy of vista premeuim)
4. gateways dont seem to have as much hardware problems ans other desktops have

I hope you won't be disappointed if it turns out to be a lemon.

If Gateway won't even resell it themselves as a refurb, I'd be very nervous about that. TigerDirect can also be very difficult with their support if something goes wrong with it.

Did a support package from Gateway come with it?

Best of luck.

hi all the gateway arrived today first impressions its a nice sold system
issues minor one at that
1. cant control the fans theres an option in the bios to disable automatic fan control i did that but theres no way i can adjust it with speed fan

yea, well you can't expect too much of power user features in a $500 gateway...
