I'm looking for some game recommendations. What FPS games have the most entertaining single player modes. I'm not interested in multilayer but instead a fun single player experience. The last FPS I really enjoyed was Boarderlands. I took a break and sold my GPU to focus on my thesis and I just picked up a 6930 for gaming at 1680 x 1050. So what good fps games have come out in the last 2 years?

I've been looking at some fps lists but most of them focus on the multilayer game play. With the exception of rage and bioshock infiniteward.
 
dead space 1 and 2, serious sam bfe. both batmans are really fun too though not really FPSs.
 
Hard Reset, Killing Floor, Saints Row 3, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Prototype, Red Faction: Guerrilla, Left 4 Dead 2, Alan Wake, The Darkness 2, the HD versions of Serious Sam, Payday: The Heist, Rage

Portal 2 is not run and gun but is an excellent FP game

Amazon has Borderlands GotY, download edition on sale for $7.50 right now. It is both SP and MP. I've only played SP but have played the game for HOURS.

It is really a blast but it needs a little tweaking to get perfect. There are lots of guides out there for making a few adjustments for FOV, mouse acceleration, etc. For $7.50, you will get your money's worth!

CoD series:
CoD4:MW/MW2/MW3 - modern military fps with scripted events, epic set pieces

Battlefield:BC2 - this actually wasn't that bad imo, more military-style fps

FEAR series - modern day fps w/ horror elements

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas series - squad-based modern day tactical shooter

OP said he played borderlands already. :p DLCs might be worth the time though if he hasnt done those.

I'm assuming you want more "current" games otherwise of course I'd recommend that entire series.
 
Stalker series, all three of them and with the amount of mods that can be added on there is alot of replay value.
 
Well all of the newer games have already been mentioned, but I have one recommendation.


Doom 1 and 2 + Skulltag + Brutal Doom mod
Been playing through it recently and I'm having more fun with this game than with a lot of modern fps. It's a blast if you're looking for something challenging. Brutal Doom makes the games much more gory, much more action packed, and much harder.

Playing the first one with the "complete mod" .... AGAIN. Absolutely love this series and there is a complete mod for each game. There are tons of great mods, but start with that one and it makes for an awesome game experience.

Agreed. Especially with the Complete mods for all three,and the upcoming Lost Alpha mod. Fallout 3 and Fallout:New Vegas are also good with a large number of mods available.
 
Mass Effect 3 too. I mean, granted people get annoyed about the ending, but the game itself is really good.

As above me, I found Deus Ex HR to have a really really good plot and was overall an engrossing solid game.
 
And still the best looking game ever made..

Nothing has come close to metro yet in terms of visuals.
 
Some people have reading comprehension issues. The OP asked for "FPS" game recommendations. FPS means "first person shooter" not "third person shooters." If he wanted third person shooters, or shooters in general, I'm sure he'd have asked.

Dead Space 1 & 2 are NOT first person shooters. Neither are the Batman games which you seemed to recognize somewhat.

Saint's Row 3 and Prototype are not first person shooters. They are third person. Prototype isn't even really a shooter exactly.

They aren't first person shooters. They are third person shooter/RPG's. Let's recommend a real time strategy while we are at it even though that isn't what was asked. I recommend the entire series despite Mass Effect 3's shitty ending, but none of them are FPS games.

Well my hatred for Deus Ex is fairly well known, but by most accounts the second game was utter trash. I never played the third game but it looked OK.

Deus Ex HR has a shitty ending. I know, I saw it both at the end of that game watching a friend play it, and saw similar trash at the end of Mass Effect 3.

One thing that bugs me about STALKER games is how bad the gun models are. They are all mirroed (left handed) and don't even have remotely accurate details, colors, etc.

Highest recommendation: METRO 2033 is a lesser-known shooter with absolutely amazing graphics and really fun and thrilling shootouts from end to end. It's from Europe and based on a post-apocalyptic russian novel so there is lots of detail and texture with a slightly different flavour and style than your typical AAA corporate product.

Can also recommend:

Crysis 2 was a pretty solid, fairly classic style single player FPS with amazing graphics.

Transformers: War for Cybertron is not first-person but it has a lot of great action and if you ever liked Transformers it's the best ever use of the license.

Yeah that gets me too. I saw all the non-FPS games and 10 year old FPS games getting recommended and realized almost no one answered the OP's question. I didn't provide a lot of insight either as what I could have recommended was already mentioned by others. Most of the FPS games I've played recently were either crap, or multiplayer focused. Which is not what the OP was asking for. Now, I will say that the days of first person shooters dominating the landscape seem to be at an end. 3rd person shooters seem to get most of the attention now. Probably because these work a bit better as multiplatform games. FPS games aren't exactly all that well done on consoles comparatively. It seems harder to get things right when you adjust that field of view and take the character out. Either that or it's a brand recognition thing typing you to a character that you are forced to look at vs. you seeing through the protagonist and essentially placing yourself into the role.

In any case I used to dislike many 3rd person shooters until I came to the realization that they work the same way. They just have a dude taking up a significant portion of the screen. Once I accepted this truth, I found them easier to enjoy. Games like Mass Effect which allow the customization of armor and the look of the character have an additional level of satisfaction due to the personalization you can see. So in that regard being 3rd person is a benefit. There are a lot of shooters in general which I think we could recommend, and many which have already been recommended, but unless the OP widens the net for recommendations, there isn't much to say beyond:
  • Metro 2033
  • Crysis 2
  • CoD single player games (and this is just to fill the list, these are fun, but way too short for the cost of the game)
  • BF3 single player (better than CoD, but still not worth the price without taking advantage of the multiplayer aspect of the game.)
  • Hard Reset
  • F.E.3.R.
  • The Darkness II
This is all I can think of that's come out in the last two years. I've got other recommendations I could make like Aliens Vs. Predator, but it falls outside the OP's listed criteria. And a recommendation like that vs. something like Mass Effect is at least the same type of game that was asked for even though it is slightly older than the OP was wanting. For those who posted non-relevant recommendations, consider this: If you feel the OP is doing themselves a disservice by keeping the selection criteria too vague or limited, question the criteria. Don't fill up the thread with recommendations which are so far out of line with what was asked. Further more, the recommendations which are way outside the time line the OP was looking at are no doubt based on feelings of nostalgia. Games which are severely dated which the OP may not have played are not likely to be received as well due to viewing them from a different perspective. They'll have dated mechanics, dated graphics, and may take some effort to get working on a modern system. In otherwords such a recommendation is about as useful as a recommendation based on your feelings of nostalgia. Something that the OP isn't likely to share. Also consider that the OP may already know and have played such games, but is looking for something new because that's simply what they want.

Cliffs:
  • Learn to read.
  • Don't be retarded.
  • Your nostalgic feelings are irrelevant.

I will try dead island and look into stalker more. It seems that it is frequently recommended here.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is pretty dated and wasn't especially fun. The whole orange box is awesome, including portal. Portal two was great. I wish I could find something that is as fun as half life 2 or saints row 2. Hopefully borderlands 2 will be good.

Dead Island was fun, but it was so bug ridden I couldn't stand it. I played it for about 10 hours or so and then gave up on it. I've heard they've fixed everything but at the time they started really patching it, I had ceased to care anymore.

No idea why people were recommending 3rd person shooters like Dead Space and Mass Effect?

I also nominate Metro 2033. Not the most well executed game but it's moody and scary at times. Parts with the gas mask have an excellent sense of dread and despair.
 
I can't recommend Hard Reset. It's been absolutely linear so far, and I'm totally stuck on level 4 with the big gun.

Yeah, shooters on the pc, is kinda at a holding point right now. Nothing really special going on.
 
I like the following,
Far cry 2, it's fun and looks really good. Check point guards respawning as soon as you go a little ways away and come back is annoying though.
All of the Crysis games
Black site area51
Fear series
Cod series
Bf3 and bc2, I personally wouldn't pay full price for these Or the cod games just for the single player campaign though.
Half life 2 and the episodes, kinda old but still fun.

I bought metro 2033 awhile ago but haven't played it yet.
 
Honestly, I enjoyed Bulletstorm. Not the newest, and far from the greatest, but it was very much worth the time I spent playing it. (It was a gift, so the cost didn't really factor in.)
Not a shooter, but still FP, I've enjoyed "Amnesia, the Dark Descent". Still haven't managed to get super far in it, due both to lack of free time, and the fact that I'm a pansy & get creeped out by the game.

If for some reason, you happen to have missed out on it, I would recommend the Half Life games. HL2 was all kinds of fun even if it is a little old. I had fun with the old Call of Juarez games too.

One of the best mods ive played for CoP for sure and i did 2 playthroughs just trying to find all the weapons that are hidden, plus the atmosphere in it draws you in. They are working on Misery 2.0 right now adding PROJECT M.S.O. - MASSIVE SIMULATION OVERHAUL by Trojanuch which is going to give the zone more life. http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-misery
 
 
If you liked the RPG elements in Borderlands then Fallout: New Vegas plus the expansions, plus Project Nevada plus NMC's Texture Pack is pure perfection. Totally open world, kill anyone or anything you want and take their stuff too.

If you want a more direct FPS then Metro 2033

Not first person, but I actually quite enjoyed the Ghostbusters game
