I was thinking about buying a 32" 1080p sony bravia HDTV for a monitor, but it seems the general consensus is that pc monitors are better. What would be a good monitor 26" or above that would be better than an HDTV? My budget is about $600 (since that's how much a 32" hdtv would cost), but I'm looking for the best bang for buck. It will be used for movies and gaming.

Really, the best 27 inch is the 2711 but you're going to have to stretch your budget a bit.

Samsung P2770HD would be my recommendation. $449.99 at Micro Center, and has the tuner built in. Best of both worlds, unless you're looking for resolutions above 1920x1080.

IIYAMA B2712HDS-B1 ;)
Or, if you have patience, the Asus PG276, which will be 120hz. ;)

I don't want to spend that much. Is it safe to say that a 32" HDTV would be on par with the quality of other TN panel monitors posted here, or would they still be better?

Even better; it's currently $349 at Amazon :)

Depends. HDTVs often make some sacrifices when it comes to PC use, but some are definitely better than others. A 27" monitor will likely give you sharper text at the expense of color accuracy and viewing angles (most HDTVs use IPS or VA panels).

It really comes down to what's most important for you. The HDTV would most likely fare better when it came to movies (one of your intended uses) but it will almost certainly have more input lag and a slower response time than a TN monitor when it comes to gaming (your other intended use). But the games would probably look better on the HDTV due to the panel type. Pros and cons...

I would recommend the BenQ M2700HD. It's a bit pricer than the Samsung, but you get more connections and you get 2 HDMI ports instead of one. It's more packed than the Samsung. Plus unlike the Samsung it doesn't give off a greenish tint. The BenQ is also 100cd/m brighter than the Samsung.

I saw it on Amazon for $449, but I'm sure you can get it cheaper, because that's on Amazon hahaha.

It's worth checking out and it's in your budget. Don't take my word for it. I'm google some reviews and you'll see what I mean regarding the greenish tint on the Samsung, haha.
