Hello again everyone. :) I just got done purchasing a new pair of logitech Z-5500's. Yes after holding back this long you guys finally convinced me to purchase a set of them.

Now that my order is in(they should be here sometime this week) I need to figure out what is the correct placment for them????

First and foremost. Heres a pic of my room with my current AltecLansing ADA-885 setup:

As you can see I am somewhat limited with space.

Try and imagine this. If I am sitting up strait in my chair the front speakers are at ~-15degree decline from my ears. They are placed approximately 2.5 feet from me. Now the rear speakers are where they should be (i think) they are exactly 90degrees on either side from me, and both the left and right are ~3ft from me.

Now for my question. Shold the front speakers be further away from me and higher (need an audiophilie's opinion(basically will it sound better)? Or should the placment of my new Z-5500's be exactly where my current speakers are (oh and this setup doesnt have a center channel, I was going to mount the center Z-5500 to the bottom of that shelf above my monitor.

I was originally thinking about mounting the front right on my wall, and the front left will sit right next to my rig, but wasnt sure if that would be a plus or not.

The reason I need to know this is because I am buying a HIGH QUALITY optical cable (yes it needs to run from that X-FI breakout box in my stacker to the right input on the Z-5500 speaker. So I need to find out if I need a 8ft or 12ft cable. Is it ok to coil up fiber optic cable if I have excess? Is there any negative effects to getting a longer cable(say the 12 ft one)? I am thinking of getting a Belkin PureAV SILVER optical cable, any objections? I need to know before I go and buy a $50 cable that ends up being too short :(

i would:

a) put the left and right front speakers on those shelves on either side of the monitor...
b) mount the center channel on the wall directly above the monitor (the top shelf will be too high)...
c) try to get the surrounds a few degrees farther back (maybe 10 or so) from my seating position...
d) no, it doesn't hurt to loop optical cable, and as a matter of fact, you are better off being a little long so that you don't have to make sharp angles. however, this one for 5 bucks will do you just as good...

as usual, all imo... :)
 
Duhh,

I COMPLETELY forgot about the shelves next to my monitor, hell even if I wanted to I could build some extensions on my desk so I wouldnt even have to sacrifice my shelves.

As for the rears, its going to be a little hard to get them further back, bed is kind of stuck there (yes my room is like a rubik's cube when it comes to moving stuff :p)

Anywho, I have been reading up on optical cables, some differ in quality but overall if you pick any brand name chances are its going to be fine for my application. (Although I did find a $90 Belkin optical cable on ebay for $40 :)(which is still ALOT for a cable, I mean comeon its not even copper) )

Darkfog, optical cables do not work in the same sense that cables with wire do... they transmit their data in the form of light and not electricity. I see no benifite to a "high end" optical cable, unles you just really like the way it looks (or if you can hear a diffrence :rolleyes: ).

It's hard to improve the transmittance of light. Eaither it makes it or it doesn't.

No, it does'nt matter if you wind the cable up... just as long as its not breaking the cable. (optical cables do not experience EMI interfearence as wire cables do)
But then again, if you want to spend more money on an optical cable, go for it.

As for how long the cable can be, check your source documentation to see if they have a limit on the length of cable.

Anyways, as for the speaker placement. If you say the two rears are in the correct position as far as height goes, get two more of those stands, and put them on eaither side or your desk. (if this does'nt make sense, and you don't mind me editing your picture, I can visually show you).
The center channel is a tough one to place from your picture.... if only you had an LCD monitor ^_^.

On a side note, that's a fancey vintage receiver you have there. Marantz? I love the look of metal.

You are right in that optical cables transmits data in the form of light, but the medium still matters. Most cheap optical cables are made of plastic. A nice glass optical cable will help reduce jitter in the signal.

Oh really? What do you mean by jitter and what causes jitter?
I just read the description on the monster optical cable that claimed to reduce jitter.

I'm tempted to point out Mister X's quote in your sig...

Jitter is introduced when you have a device output/inputing a digital signal. It's a time-based error that can cause a loss in synchronization.

Anywho I think that I may go with a Belkin or more affordable Monster cable . I dont mind paying a little extra when it comes to better performance(I have been reading that crappier cables have tendancies to loose sync with movies and such, and I refuse to spend this much on speakers only to have that happen.

I DO know what a fiber optic cable is and does, I am studying networking communications in College so I know all about what they are, how they are structured, and lastly how they function. ;)

Ive had a very good experience with Belkin products in the past, I think Ill get their 12' optical cable. There really is no negatives to getting a higher grade cable (well except for spending more cash on it that is).

As far as the front speakers go, I may consider your idea. That stand you see, I didnt buy it. Its homemade out of a microphone stand, some copper, and a plexi support base for the speaker. Since these speakers are shielded I dont think I should have a problem with them being close to my monitors (now Im not sure to what extent the word magnetically shielded means though)

If you want to hack up my photo go right ahead. :)

As for that amp. Good eye! Yes it is a Marantz one. Gotta love that sleek metal. Its been arount for YEARS in my family. It originally was my dads but then he got tired with it and I inherited it. :)

Just ebayed a Belkin 12' Blue Series optical cable for $23. VERY affordable IMO. Now to wait for my system to get here. I am really praying it makes it here in 1 piece, seeing it needs to come from Califorina and go to Pennsylvania, via UPS. Oh noes

Ok heres a revision of my original setup, I took my shelf apart to make things a bit easier, heres what it looks like if I were looking at my monitors.

Now from that wall in the back its a good 4 feet. However I would need to mount them pretty high in order for the sound to get to me(instead of the monitors blocking the sound). Ideas?

PS. Anyone know if its safe to have 2 CRT monitors THAT close together? (Air circulation is not a problem, I just dont know if there is any issue with magnetic fields or something of that nature. :confused:

Oh and guys, I want to keep the speakers somewhat close to me (like not across the entire room) I have neighbors that are picky when it comes to alot of noise (I live in a condo) Yeah I know there is alot of power with this system, but that doesnt mean I have to use it all :p

yea, you are barking up the same tree... having the bed smack dab in the middle of the room like that is eating up way more space than he can afford it to, given the limited amount of space in the room...

if we can bump it back in that corner over there (i'm guessing there's gotta be a door on the wall that pic is taken from, so the head of the bed would go up against the wall next to the door) and get rid of about 2/3rds of the shelving, maybe we can make something work...

edit: dark, what's the dimensions on the room?

First of all, I had to laugh when you asked me if something was on sale. No I keep alot of stuff in those boxes, really dont have anywhere else to put them at.

Apparently I didnt provide enough pics so heres a few more, this time it gives you an idea of my whole room setup. My room literialy hasnt been changed in 4 years, obviously this is why it is so hard.

And ccotenj, no I dont need to run the tv though it. I have a tv card in my box so it really doesnt matter.

since you have a tv card in the 'puter, can we ditch the tv set?

it looks like we've got 3 printers, a fax and a scanner in there? do we really need all that stuff? looks like we've got a monitor hanging out all by it's lonesome over there on one of those shelves, can we get rid of that?

can we fit the humidifier (or is it a de-humidifier) in the closet?

what else can we get rid of?

First of all have 2 printers, yeah need them both, ones a photo and the other business. Scanner is a must. TV, yes I absolutely want to keep that, I still like to watch TV on and a actuall tv set, maybe down the road ill get a projector or something.

Thats not a dehumidifier, its my air conditioner, it CANNOT be moved, theres a hole in the wall where it blows the hot condensor air out of.

That spare monitor can go somewhere, the only thing I use it for is when I repair friends PC's (which is not all that often).

So basically, the tv can be moved, but the AC is stuck in its place.

Oh and one more thing. ALL of my power is behind my computer table, not a big fan of long ass extension cords so the computer is somewhat stuck here.

Like I said rubik's cube of all rooms :D


Theres NO way that I can put speakers in that wouldnt involve redoing my whole room??

Dude comeon, this is not bad at all. Get rid of the boxes AS I said I have nowhere to put them (attic maybe but that gets exremely hot up there). Really wht else is there, just stuff thats left that has some sentimental value. Pretty much my LIFE is up here, I dont get out much at all.

Can care less bout my bed, its there to sleep in not look all pretty, my box is what is supposed to draw your attention :p
 
nah, let's chew on this, we can come up with something... it's not that bad... i live in 100 year old "shotgun" house, trust me, i know difficult rooms... just gotta imagine the room "empty" (well, other than the immovable objects, i see the vent hose for the a/c now)...

hmmm... gotta be a way to make this work better... you've got a ton of wall space, it's just getting eaten by shelving right now...

I think i would like the desk where that shelf that has the computers on it now is.
Dresser in the closet.

Put the TV in front of the window ..... put the big speakers on both sides of the tv.
After that I am kinda stuck

actually, if you don't want to move anything, i don't blame you, and i'd go back to the the suggestion that i made way back in my first reply...

put the fronts up on top of the shelves on either side of your monitor to get them at "ear level", mount the center right above the monitor (you can get mounts that will stick out from the wall so you can get it right above it), and get another (or fabricate another) stand to put the right rear on...

if i was you though, i'd try to move a few things around, just to give me a little more floor space... maybe remove about half of the shelving and put some stuff that is on them closer together... mister x's suggestions are a good place to start...
