I'm in the market for a new OTDR. I'm currently using an antiquated TekRanger, built in 1996, that still does the job quite well. Now that our business is expanding, and I have a second fiber guy, I am going to need to buy a new unit (probably two, because this thing is likely getting close to the end of it's life). I've been looking at three units, but can't decide what I like best. The three I have been looking at are: Corning OV1000, Fluke Optifiber, and EXFO FTB-1.

Anybody else around here use an OTDR regularly? I'm looking for some real world experience here to help me make my decision. I am a tad shy about dropping 10-20k a unit without doing some serious research first.

Thanks in advance.

At my old job we tested Corning, EXFO and JDSU for our new OTDR's. The EXFO was the nicest of the bunch and what the tech's wanted, but in the end it was shot down and we got the cheaper JDSU unit. Corning was pretty much written off after the sales guy left as didn't know much about the units and seemed more interested in selling us splicers to replace our 4 month old Fujikura FM-60s.

Nicest things about EXFO were the speed of fault detection compared to the others, auto scan had pretty good accuracy, and the software seemed much more mature then the others.

At work we use the Exfo FTB-200 for CWDM. It's a really nice solid unit and comes with two modules, each with 4 wavelenghts. It's a very comprehensive device. It has a lot of features that we will never use as we use fiber contractors to shoot most of our links but in a break fix situation, we do use it from time to time. We also use the JDSU 6000a with.OTDR modules. I think the EXFO is easier to use..

Thanks for the responses. The more i read, the more I lean towards the Exfo. It does seem to be the better unit, and the price isn't terrible either. I'm going to do some more research before i put an order in next week.
