recommend me an image/document management application

My parents just bought a scanner and upon installing some of the s/w that came with it I found that it's all crap! My parents want to reduce some of the paper that's floating around the house by scanning it, organizing it, etc... Something that has a folder/tree view on the left side and a thumbnail view on the right.
Ideally, I'd like something with an easy to use interface without a lot of bloat. (my parents know how to operate a computer but they aren't very computer savvy)

I'll second picasa... Google just released version 2 for free. While it won't rival Photoshop for the image editing capbilities that it has, the organization functions are pretty nice. It took a few extra minutes to get used to how it functions so be careful that you don't accidentally end up sedning the wrong files to the recycle bin as opposed to just removing them from the Picasa database.
