I'm looking to purchase a webcam, most likely in the sub-200 range.

I'd like good to very-good "still-shot" quality, with at least decent motion video.

microphone/sound quality wise, I'm not too particular if they even have one/the capability. I'm really not even sure if it's a popular thing to include audio support or if they expect consumers to already have a microphone or purchase one seperately.

Software-wise, I would prefer a solution that doesn't need tons of crazy specialized propreitary software, but it's not the end of the world I guess.

Connectivity wise, I'm guessing most these days are USB or FireWire. I'm not that particular, but I'd think a FireWire model would tend to be a bit "less propreitary" as it would just show up as a generic camera?

Lots of things here. . . sub $200 webcam should be just about all of them -- I've never heard of one more than $99. Unless you're talking digital camera, which you could also easily get for sub-$200.

As for specialized software - none require it. . . Windows XP movie maker takes video/audio fine, and can encode recordings to different formats. It's free.

Most are USB, as they don't collect high-enough quality video to necesitate Firewire. . . and I'm not sure what you mean by it showing up as "generic camera" as all my products that use Firewire show up as what they're supposed to be. . .

Anyway, logitech made some nice ones, though I've heard people say good things about Intel's as well. For sub-$200, you can pick the most expensive model of either brand and buy it (or maybe even two). They should both suit your needs.


HOWEVER, I highly recommend getting a digital camera for that price range. Fatwallet.com forums should find you a deal on a good one for ~$200.
