I am sick of the inkjet that i am using now. I'm not even a particularly heavy printer (probably because my printer is crap), but it seems like I'm having to replace the ink cartridge every two weeks.

I have very little knowledge of printers, so i'm not sure what to look for in a good printer. Good cost per page would be nice.

I'm looking to spend around $100-200 on a new printer.
 
What do you use your printer for?

How often do you use your printer? (e.g. twice a week, once every other month, etc.

Do you need a multifunction printer (with scanning, copying, or faxing functions)?
 
If you have no need for colour and print black and white only, then I would reccomend the HP Laserjet 1606DN, its an entry level laser printer with network capability and will also print on both sides without the need to swap the paper manually. If you want a multifunction with colour, then I would suggest the HP Officejet Pro 8600, I just bought one and so far its been great. The thing about HP's these days is that when you buy them you get a 'starter' cartridge which is not a full cartridge, it sucks but thats just the way it is. The Officejet 8600, while being an inkjet device, is supposed to get laser 'like' yields with normal cartridges. I also own the 1606DN, its a fantastic laser printer, great for small home/offices. Both devices support printing from Apple idevices as well.
 
I use printer for: Essays, coping sheets out of books, student type things

I use my printer pretty much every day or every other day. The range is probably 1-10 sheets per day that i use it.

Yes to multifunction.
Doublesided printing would be nice too.

Color? Not really that important.

I did a little looking around on amazon and the HP toner seems a lot more expensive than Brother toner.
 
The Brother DCP-7065DN easily fits your needs. It has both multifunction features and duplexing capabilities and it falls under your $200 limit.

The HP toner may be more expensive then the Brother, but my experience with Brother printers has been nothing short of frustration, they make absolute shit printers, I would never recommend one. HP's quality has dropped way down from what it once was, but I still prefer them to Brother. Canon is ok, but I only have experience with their colour inkjets and not their multifunctions.

Printers, you get what you pay for. "Cheap" printers, especially inkjets are almost always crap IME. They suck ink that costs more than the printer in a month and print ridiculously slow. If you're spending less than $2-300 on an MFC inkjet, you're going to end up frustrated in slow print times *and* monthly $50+ buys of ink if you print regularly. Printing color is nice, but when it is stated as a minimal need/priority it isn't worth the hit in cost or speed.

My Brother 2270 was $80USD and actually does 25-30 PPM single-sided full-text documents or B/W graphics, and a toner costs $45 for 2600 pages of real life volume...and the printer you just linked to costs more and only does 8PPM on the best of days and will only do a few dozen pages for $50 of ink.

YMMV of course, but I've had two Brother units and I've loved them both....and if/when I need a new laser I'll be buying another one of theirs. I'd also take Brother's small driver packages over HP's bloated 300MB printer driver downloads any day.
