I'm in need of a 4 port PCI-Express x1 SATA controller card for my dualie box as the video card HSF covers one PCI slot and a sound card is going in the other PCI slot that's available and that leaves me with a single PCI-E x1 slot.

I have no experience with any PCI-E cards so I was wondering if anybody here could recommend me one. RAID isn't necessary as I probably won't use it, but it must be compatible with Linux (I'm running a 64 bit 2.6 kernel).

Had you considered using a port multiplier instead of a card? They're still fairly expensive ($80 for 5 ports), but looking at Newegg, the more expensive 2-port x1 cards are verging on that, and this is more fun :D You can use it with most onboard controllers (I know for sure that the Marvell 4/8-port chips support it, so check with your manufacturer first) and still get good speeds to all 5 disks connected to it. Another option to consider, anyways.

As for compatibility, it should depend entirely on the card it's plugged into.

I'm not familiar with port multipliers...are those for external hard drive enclosures? I'm looking to keep all the hard drives in my case.

Also, the one you posted was SATA2, but is it backwards compatible (like HDDs are) with the Sil 3114 chip on my Asus K8N-DL (it's only SATA150)?
