Recommend me a GPU

200 Canadian is a bit less than 200 american, folks seem to be forgetting.

4870/4890 or a GTX 260/275 would do you well if you aren't planning on dumping more into a monitor.

I usually buy whatever is on sale.

I'm using an 8800GT right now and a 20" LG 1680*1050 monitor. The monitor is fine but I'd really like to clone my display to my HDTV and the best/easiest way would be to have the same resolution on both displays (re: 1080P).

I'll be getting the GPU for $254CAD ($240USD) after taxes.

Win7 requires both displays to run at the same resolution in clone mode
Why would you not buy a DX11 card now?
5850s are in your price range. $280CAD

My last upgrade was from an x1950xt to the 8800gt which I'm still running. I try not to upgrade frequently, maybe every 12-18 months depending on my requirements.

The only thing I plan on doing is getting an 1920x1080 monitor so I can clone my desktop for my TV in the living room because I also use my PC as my media box.

then I would go with the 4890, will do 95% of what you will need and is currently 2/3 the cost. you can also get a 4850 for about 1/2 the cost (of the 5850) and it would do 85% or better. there are only few other features that might make the 5850 the better buy, if your looking at image quality (angle independent AF, and such), need (or want really) DX11 support for upcoming titles, or power usage. none of those are that convincing to most people. so, I would say go with the 4890.

Why not wait 1-2 weeks for the 5770 to come out? It'll have better than 4870 level performance for under $200 and sport DX11 + Eyefinity. The power consumption is pretty awesome too at 18w idle/108 load.

Best choice for great performance and value.

From what I've been reading the 4890 and the 5770 will be competing against each other with very similar performance (most say the 4890 will edge out the 5770). Knowing how hot these cards will be at launch I can assume higher than MSRP prices for the short term.

So I can buy a 4890 now <$200 or wait a couple weeks and get the 5770 for $200-$230 depending on the demand of these cards. The only benefit would be lower idle power consumption/temps and DX11.

I like the idea of buying the 4890 because it's had more time to mature and more refined cooling designs. I've always found new gen. cards to be lacking in the cooling/overclocking department, at least until manufactures wise up and tweak the cooling setup a bit and go away from the reference design.

5770 will start at $159... 5750 will start at like $109-125. Plus I really think you should withhold whatever "facts" you think you know about the 5770 until we actually get some gameplay results, then make your decision. The reviews will be released in 1 week when the card goes live. Make your decision then, Brent said we will surprised by the performance of the 5750/5770.

Price looks pretty sweet considering the savings in power at idle as well.

Idle power savings is a moot point for me. Energy rates here are pretty low at $0.065/kWh.

Let's assume I were to save 200w of energy per hour by getting the new 5xxx series video card. Assuming I left my PC on 24/7 I would only save $113/year if it was idling the entire time. Realistically I would only save 50-100w of idle time which is probably about 75% of the time which ends up being ~$42 for the year of energy savings. It's something but it's not enough for me to factor it into my decision making.

So now that the 57xx series has been released, any thoughts? Looks like the 4870 is very similar in performance. I think I'm going to treat myself though and go for the 5850 once I can find an XFX or Asus card in stock. Typically I've always spent ~$300 for a video card so why stop now. My only concern is that my processor (e6750 @ 3.2) will the the bottleneck of the GPU. How badly will it affect my frame rates?

not that much, you could use an upgrade but an e6750 is not that bad for most of the current games. clock speed is still more important then cores for the time being

Just pulled the trigger on an Asus 5850. I can't wait. I'm looking forward to playing Crysis and GTA4. Should have it either today or tomorrow.

Received my Asus 5850 today and wow is it ever fast. I'm so happy I made this purchase. No buyer's remorse here. Time to install Crysis.
