I have a C2D Q6600 right now and I want to upgrade the stock intel HSF.

This is for a HTPC so quiet is important. I am moving the internals to a Fractal Design Define R4. Eventually I will upgrade this to an Ivy Bridge i5 or i7 so compatibility with both socket types is important.

I was thinking about the Corsair H50/60 etc, but wasn't sure about noise, and compatibility might be an issue. Air cooling is an option, but would prefer not getting the huge shoebox sized heatsinks.

What is a good middle of the road cooler/fan combo that would be much better then intel stock, quiet and not toooo big.

CM Hyper 212+ is always a great option. Cheap enough at 25 bucks that if you decide you want something better when you upgrade to an Ivy build, you didn't take a lot out of pocket.

it will go into the fractal r4, and from what I have seen, I can fit a windmill in there. however still, quiet factor is the main thing.
 
Well then forget the AXP-100. The thing about noise is that it's going to depend on the fan(s), not the heatsink. I prefer "sonically invisible" systems and typically run Scythe Slipstream PWMs fans on a PWM header - http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=26797
They can actually spin as low as 0rpm, but I had them set up to do ~200-300rpm while in 2d mode, and they'd go up to ~1500rpm if I was gaming. I'd pick a cooler first then start looking at fans like the ones listed in my last post, Noiseblockers, etc. Just about everything is going to be MUCH quieter than the stock heatsink you're using now.
 
how much clearance do these things have?

I just looked at the motherboard layout that I have right now, the Asus P5K-VM:

the heatsink on that north/south bridge looked high and close. I opened up my case, and it is as high as the ram, and my ram has just the basic cover, no fins.

Its hard to say but im nervous there is not enough clearance.
 
which one is on the left? can you orientate these anyway you want? I could turn it so that the long side goes from ram to back. that should clear the heatsink, and hopefully with more distance, should clear the ram on the long side. fan though would not face the rear exhaust.

the ram and heatsink height is about inch and a quarter.
 
lol that's system is all heatsink. jelous!

thanks to all, got plenty of choices to go with. will look at what will most likely fit. I guess the fan choice will be more important for noise, and pretty much anything will be better then stock.
 
the cm 212+ may fit. the fan heatsink are at 37mm, slightly higher than the inch and a quarter the bridge heatsink is at. just not sure if its far enough away.

what about the ZALMAN CNPS9500 AT? Because its rounded, it slopes up and away fast enough to clear the mb heatsink.
