I may want to build a sff pc again in the future and would like a modular psu. Are there any decently priced ones that are reliable? Don't recommend seasonic because i have had 2 of those fail.
 
The X2 is my favorite and it is a fairly good power supply (obviously not the best you can buy). It looks good and fits into most SFF cases but apparently not the PC-V300 which i found out after a customer couldn't get it to fit.

good thing you said that, I was gonna order that case and mobo today with my pre order of the abit mobo :)

guess silverstone gets my money, or i should look into another case
 
so that 550 ultra X2 can handle an mildly oced conroe system with 8800 GTS and x-fi sound card? Also, what is the best heatsink that can be used? I tried the zalman7700 before and that thing became glued to the mobo. The screws just would not budge.

If I were wanting a nice case and setup (as you need to want) then I'd go with my most popular setup which is the Silverstone SG01 w/ or w/o windows, NT06 heatsink, ST50E-Plus SC power supply and then get the F-I90HD to go with it.

That setup is great but you can't get a 8800GTX in it...only a 8800GTS.

If you want the GTX you are gonna have to go Micro Fly...and then I'd suggest the MX6.

You also have the LANBOX if you want a better "lanning" machine (the handle is awesome).
 
i notice that ppl use the NT06 in many setups but with fan underneath the fins. does that work well?

If you got money to burn the Qmicra can fit the 8800GTX and a Zalman 9500hsf. It'll aslo fit some nice size ATX power supplies as well.
 
You may have better success asking in the Power Supply section. I would recommand the Corsair HX520W.

there all good psus but i guess it all depends on what case your putting it in and
how much wattage you want out of it..

i use a Enermax Liberty 500W myself in a silver stone sugo evo. and it works
really well. but if the Corsair HX 520W was out at the time i was looking for a
new psu i would of gone for that..

so my vote for a new modular psu would be the: Corsair HX 520W // Corsair HX 620W

but im very happy with my Enermax Liberty 500W its quiet and does the job well
 
I recently looked into this and my requirements were (1) modular to keep the internals neat and cool, (2) expensive in the hopes of good reliability & performance and (3) some bling since it is going into a SG01 case with clear side. I narrowed the field to two:

ULTRA X2 550W
OCZ ModStream 520W

I ended up going for the ULTRA as it is newer and liked the promise of the flat cables allowing better routing and cooling. And it just looks so cool.... I've already ordered, but will build next week so no real world feedback yet.
 
OCZ is awful too. I have a OCZ gamestreme 600w right now and guess what? It smoked and now my pc shutsdown everynow and then
 
yeah the ULTRA X2 550W is a nice psu as well. i own 1 myself the X2 550W PSU - Titanium w/ UV Blue

im very happy with the psu myself the cables are well designed. the cables can be hard to bend in some places. but apart from that its a great psu
 
I might get flamed for saying this, but I wouldn't even consider an Ultra PSU. I put one in my wife's system and it took the motherboard and graphics card with it when it went out. I was so mad, but I should have known better because I had read about others suffering the same fate. Just do a search in the Power Supply forum or google and you will see numurous complaints about Ultra PSU destroying systems when they go out. They might have improved lately, but they have a horrible reputation. I bought a Corsair HX 520W because of the reviews and I wasn't willing to take a chance with the one that came with my Microfly. It sure does look good sitting in a box in my closet. Good luck.

Yeah, you will get flamed because this was the first X-Connect. Since then Ultra has gone to a different manufacturing company (IIRC) and the X2 is known to be a better power supply (but obviously not the best). If you read recent information on Ultra you will see that they have come a long way from that one batch of X-Connects that died.

QFT - the new X-Pro, X-Finity, and other new Ultra models are made by different OEM manufacturers. It seems the company has learned their lesson from the failure rates of the X-Connects.
 
oh yeah i for got to say is that the cabling on the X2 550W PSU stick out alot so it might not be a good psu to go for in a sugo.

but i guess u will have to risk it if you want a bling psu

Yeah im that customer /cry. The X2 is a nice power supply I will say, better than their original x-connect power supply's they first had. About the case though if your going to just use a normal power supply, normal graphics card it is great. The only other problem with the case though is that the hard drive cage you need to cut into the slides for any cd rom drives you want to put in so you can slide a straight cable into it. Kind of hard to explain.

Sadly im going to have to dremel my case more to fit my 8800gtx with the thermalright aftermarket cooler. Seems it hits the hard drive cage.
 
Another vote for the Hiper PSU's. Done about 6 builds with them now. They work great and come with plenty of extra cables that are easy to organize in small places.
 
The Hiper R Series have bling, but the connectors seem to stick out way too far to fit, particularly for the SG01 which is tight to begin with.

Ultra does have a bad reputation with supplies preceding the X2. And even though the X2 has received many good reviews, it did get the caution light from this review that really put it to the test. Scroll to earlier pages to read more. This review really shows me yet again Antec makes such excellent product, but theirs are are all substance and no bling.
