I wish some OEM built monitor for coders, e-ink based... unfortunately all went mainstream (even Apple), seems to be run by same brainwashed MBAs...

So, choice is not good however:

I tried couple 27" with 2560x1440 but pixels are so small that even with or without PWM it's an eye killer, so 30" or 24" is the only option but I'd like more usable space than 1920x1200...
 
thanks, this is good but unrealistic recommendation... 30" imho max for desktop...
 
Get multiple 1920x1200 or 1600x1200 and run them in portrait mode. Turn the brightness way down. There really isn't a better setup for coding.
 
Save your time, look no further. Go pick up HP ZR30W. It's the best LCD I've seen in my life. Compared even to Eizo, NEC, Dell. Best possible color, fastest response time 30" LCD for gaming,
I'm also a computer programmer, you won't go wrong with HP.
Yeah forget about those 27" 2560x1440. The vertical space suck, force user scroll up and down often.
 
I use dual dell 24" at work (1920x1200) one in landscape and one in portrait mode. Turn down your brightness and use a custom color scheme for your IDE. If you use Visual Studio, look here: http://studiostyl.es/
