I currently have a 22" 1680 x 1050 monitor and I am thinking about upgrading to a 24" 1900x1200 monitor. My question is how much more GPU power will I need? I currently have a quad core @ 2.4Ghz and I'm thinking about a 5850. Will I get the same FPS in games with a 5850 with both monitors? I have read that the processor only matters up to a certain resolution and then it's mostly the GPU that matters.
 
have you thought of pushing that quad at all, going over 3ghz will make a difference.

what are your system spec's

1920x1200 is ~31% more pixels than 1680x1050, but GPU performance doesn't scale linearly. So if you get a new GPU that is ~25% faster than the one you have now, you should see about equal frames per second. Or you could overclock if you haven't done so already, and make up some or all of that gap. A HD5770 is fine for most games at 1920x1200, and you could overclock it. If you want a more futureproof solution, I suggest waiting a couple of months for the HD6xxx series to come out in November and drive down prices for older cards, and then getting an older card (unless HD6xxx is awesome in which case get that instead). Then again if we just keep seeing console ports to PC like we have for years now, the HD5770 may last you all the way till the next generation of consoles!
 
your full system specs would help here. but yes, a 5850 would max most anything on a 24". what are you running now?
 
I don't currently have a video card (only onboard). So basically anything (including) a 5770 and above can max out the 24" at 1920 x 1200?

Most console ports @1920x1200 can get maxed or near-maxed by a 5770, especially if overclocked. Starcraft 2 will run well, too.

But some games like Crysis and BFBC2 will obviously not be maxed out. For those you will want something more like a GTX 460, HD 5850, GTX 470, HD 5870, or GTX 480, in order of increasing performance. You will sacrifice some bang for the buck to reach higher, though, and even a GTX 480 can't max out Crysis at 1920x1200.

Note that it's not the end of the world to turn down graphics settings. For instance, I could max out BFBC2, but I turned down AA to 2x in order to increase framerates for competitive play reasons. And I am plenty happy to run Team Fortress 2 on Medium in order to increase framerates at 5040x1050. (I run an OC'd 5850 on 1680x1050. Eyefinity on only in games where my card can handle it.)

Also some games will not benefit that much from a strong GPU if you have a weaker CPU.. Starcraft 2 can only use 2 cores for instance so it's better to have 2 fast cores than a slow quad core like yours.

this. for a 2.3mp screen a 5770 is a good mainstream option. it isn't recommended much here because this is H and we like the high end. but a 5770 will play 95% of games quite well on a 2.3mp screen and the other 4.8% fairly well. there will be of course the cyrsis/metro/crappy PS3 port that doesn't work but you can simple turn down some settings.
