Contract just expired, basically I've decided on the Samsung Impression http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846

But if anyone knows another great phone for att that I haven't heard about that'd be great.
I won't be able to afford the smartphone plan from att, which is why I won't be getting an iphone, so keep that in mind regarding suggestions.

I would like a touch screen, have been hearing a lot of hype about the AMOLED screens so I'm looking toward getting one, feel free to post opinions about the AMOLED screens.

Will use mostly for texting/calling. Not too much email really, not looking for a business phone.

Heard the HTC touch pro 2 is a nice phone, anybody have both and want to comment on which is better/ pros and cons?

thanks a lot any suggestions or comments appreciated.

edit: coming from a Sony Ericsson w810i, and would rate it 9/10, just outdated. Can't seem to find phones like it anymore though.

I got my girl the Impression, we returned it once within the 30 day trial because of faulty hardware, and now we have to call AT&T to replace it again a month later. Screen is gorgeous, OS is horrible (from a PDA user standpoint), keypad sucks. And no Gmail support whatsoever.

What are you specific complaints with the OS?
and the slide out keypad or the on screen keys?

thanks for quick reply

Slide out keyboard, it's a known complaint. Apparently my girl can't capitalize letters either? Haven't checked into that too much. If you type fast, it'll either not recognise the input, or it'll hit the letter 2-4 times.

As for the OS, it can handle almost any free email service EXCEPT for AT&T, the widgets are a bit limited, not very useful, etc. For texting/calling? I'd get the E71x or the Nokia Surge, without a data plan. You can always use the Wifi, and they seem to be built like tanks.

I was looking at the E71x, but I'm not sure I like it, too blackberryish for me. Same reason I dont want the blackjack or Q series. I'll look more into the surge though, not sure if I like the size/shape but it seems alright, hopefully they have one at my local AT&T store

I just upgraded my phone on att, and i stepped down from a blackberry curve to the samsung impression.
I have no regrets at all. No problems with the keypad (it is actually quite large) and it has a full html browser.

About the only thing it lacks is a decent email client, but it isn't a smartphone so it doesnt bother me that much.

Actually am posting from it right now.

I also have an Impression, and the keypad is amazing. I have no problem shifting, texting, etc.

You can join the beta program to get access to some of the newer widgets they're experimenting with.

The OS isn't horrible at all. It's just not as globally supported as the iPhone or Winmo devices. It's a java based OS so some things work, some don't.

I have to admit I get annoyed that Samsung doesn't seem to give a damn about supporting the device., there are minor quirks that could easily be fixed in an update.

once again thanks for the replies guys. I went into an Att store today, and got to toy around with the impression a bit. I was impressed at how solid it felt in my hand, and the keyboard seemed rugged enough.
Although while I was in there I was told the difference in plans for the iphone is only 20 a month, I thought it was more. So I guess it's just going to come down to price I've got to decide on.

Are the any cool mods for the impression? or 3rd party widgets/games etc?

No mods at all for the Impression.

I'll say outright that the Iphone is the best entertainment device you'll find, but it comes at a steep premium. The data plan for the Impression is $10 per month, so don't let the salespeople that are getting paid a commission gas you up with less than truthful numbers.

For me, the Impression is good enough for my realistic uses. I use it as an MP3/4 player in my truck and when I'm walking around, and it has great sound and a great screen. When I had an Ipod Touch, I didn't use it for a fraction of it's capabilities, so for me, I know I wouldn't use an Iphone for all it's worth.

The master key has been found for the Impression so it is easy to add games and apps, and it is fairly easy to mod those apps to work completely with the Impression.

You can do a google search for Samsung Impression Forums and find a few forums on the phone. Lots of great info out there on it.

And the screen is just amazing.

I honestly don't miss anything that my smart phone would do that my Impression won't. I just wish we could add more widgets easily.

$30 (iphone plan) - $10 (Impression plan) = $20 difference

Looks like this salesman knows his numbers.

Ahh, my girlfriend got an iphone today, and gave me her touch, the phone is just too fun, cant say no to all those pointless apps. With such a small base for widgets for the impression I'm probably going with an iphone after all.
Real shame about the AMOLED screen though, was really looking forward to that. A lot.

Always a fanatic that wants to argue.

No fanatic here, just someone who can do math. ;)

iDylan:

Play with the phones and get the one you like, personally I have carried most phones ATT offers as well as quite a few from Verizon and almost every phone has its plus and minus. Currently I carry the iphone for work and the bold for personal (kinda backwards I know) and if I had to choose I would choose the bold as my only device. But most would rather have and enjoy more the iPhone. If you get the iPhone you wont regret it. It is in a totally different league than the Impression. The thing that I HATE about the impression is the lock button, first you have to hold it for too long and its placement makes it awkward to hit.

The $15 plan is for data plus texting, if I recall.

And Taco, please show me exactly where I 'miscalculated' or don't know my 'numbers'. I don't mind being wrong if you can point it out, but otherwise it looks like you're just being a dick to be a dick.

Salesmen. They make baby jesus cry.

$15 for data with no texting if you have unlimited text it is $10

People who cant read make me cry . . .

OP said: "Although while I was in there I was told the difference in plans for the iphone is only 20 a month"

To which you said: ". . . so don't let the salespeople that are getting paid a commission gas you up with less than truthful numbers."

To which I said: "$30 (iphone plan) - $10 (Impression plan) = $20 difference"

Or in English: The sales person was giving accurate numbers. AND if you work for a place that gets a discount the difference would be less than $20 as the $30 iphone data qualifies for the discount and the impression data does not.

Neat how you cut my quote. Liars burn in hell. I heard one of those catholic guys say that.

"The data plan for the Impression is $10 per month, so don't let the salespeople that are getting paid a commission gas you up with less than truthful numbers"

Now where did I make my mistake? If you're going to quote, don't half quote like some moron sitting in the republican chairs in Congress. I have noticed how you're not mentioning the difference in the minute plans, but we'll ignore that.

The last thing he should do is let one of you oily invertebrates blow smoke and whisper sweet nothings to him while you slither your hands into his pocket. Now don't you have some warm rock to slither under or something?

WOW . . .

Where did the the salesman: ". . . gas you (The OP) up with less than truthful numbers"?

That is all I am asking . . .

You implied that the salesman lied by "gassing the OP up with less than truthful numbers." The salesman did no such a thing. You also used the OP encounter to point out that salesmen are slimy liers. But keep making stuff up if that makes you feel better.

You also ask for the difference in minutes, What difference? The OP can keep his plan as it is and just add the $30 per month. ( as I assume the OP is not on prepaid or a 200 minute plan.)

FWIW: There is nothing wrong or incorrect with cutting a quote up as long as the meaning is not changed by leaving some of the quote out. In your case I only included the part in which you were wrong. Leaving in the other half would not have made the incorrect part any more correct.

Edit: I have a feeling you understand nothing of what I have written so VERY easy for you:

Where did the salesman lie?

the impression is a nice phone.it is easier for me to use then the iphone and i like how i can have insurance on it.50bux for a replacement vs 400 for the iphone

I just ended up goin with the iphone, its a nice toy but for a phone i'm not really feeling it. oh well the next two years will fly by i'm sure ;)

Lol, its not bad, I couldnt live with one but after a month of use my wife loves hers. I am sure you will grow to like most of it more than you do now.

i passed on the iphone since i have butter fingers,i would rather pay 50 for a replacement then 400.i luv this impression phone.i am using it now typing this reply.it doesnt have all the apps the iphone has but i wouldnt use most of them anyways

yeah I'm sure it's just some adjusting, pretty big difference in phone style than my last phone, a sony ericsson w810i which I loved.
