Recommend a GPU for XBMC on linux

Hi guys,

I'm trying to choose a GPU for linux to use in XBMC for accelerated video decoding. I'm sort of an AMD/ATI guy, but read that there's many problems getting VAAPI running properly, I'd like a trouble free setup as much as possible. I'll run this on Asrock N68C-S UCC, Sempron 140, most likely with Gentoo.

If anyone successfully uses ATI card under linux with XBMC, please let me know which and with how much trouble to get there. The cards I'm evaluating:

HD 5450, HD 6450, GT 210 and GT 430.

I'll want to stream audio/video over a single 10 meter HDMI 1.3 cable to a 1920x1080 Samsung LCD.

If not the pottential setup problems, 5450 would be my first choice. GT 210 I can find only passive cooled and I'm not a fan of that, also read that GT 430 is a "better" (as in, I don't know by which parameters) choice for HTPC. However, it's nearly 2x the price of 5450 or 210.

Thanks

I can't say much about that particular hardware, but I can tell you that, at least in my experience, nVidia's linux drivers are much less troublesome and more up-to-date.

And why Gentoo? I'd go with a distribution with better support from both XBMC and nVidia/AMD, such as Ubuntu or Fedora.

Thanks BlueLineSwinger. I've actually pulled the trigger and bought Asus GT430 already, the price difference will likely be compensated by not wasting hours upon hours working around driver issues as that's a common/known card among XMBC users.

Re Gentoo - just a personal preference, I like the portage system and granularity tailoring software exactly to your needs very much, they all being linux and running the same (albeit patched in some instances) kernel should cause no trouble for running user space apps such as XBMC.

Agreed. NVidia's linux drivers are very stable with most linux distros. AMD drivers are a complete crapshoot; however, I have not experienced many issues with the drivers using Ubuntu.
