(Hopefully this is considered the right forum for the topic)

I'm looking for a rackmount UPS (preferrably made by APC) that is no larger than 2-3U, and can power up to three xeon servers, two switches, modem, tape, two external hdds, and a wifi AP. Anything powerful enough to power all of this? Hopefully this can be covered in a single unit. Budget - $1800.

What kind of up-time are you looking for? If you need more than about 10 minutes, your budget isn't going to cover it.

Its the right forum....but uh....what Rabid Badger said. What kind of uptime? This is might be a bit much to ask on one UPS at 1800 if you are sticking with APC.

i'd say anywhere from 10-25mins
I can increase the budget to a max of around $2200 if needed. I'm only gonna have one server for the time being, but may add one more in the future.

What power infrastructure is available in the server room (ie is a L5-30P outlet available)?

i'm not really sure to be honest. I'll have to check on that. The outlet is probably just your standard commerical grade outlet. This is in a medical office building. (For a dental office)
It has its own circuit.

I am going to toss you a few options that are just maxing out the budget since I don't know what the power draw will be of the possible 3x Xeon configuration.

APC

Now looking at those....if you have the L5-30P available and are going to spend 1800. Jump on the Leibert like a fat kid on a twinkie....don't buy the APC. Otherwise, given the price points the Tripp-Lite's are much better dels.

thanks for the response. I'm almost certain it is a 5-20P outlet.

I'm running 2 of those APC 1500va rackmounts for my setup AMD, and it powers 4 servers, 2 24 port switches, aten kvm, monitor, cable modems (2), everythingelsethatimissed.

i think dell had a great price last time on their branded 1500va, they were like 350 a piece.

sounds good
do you think i'd be fine with one of those 3000va units for one server, maybe another in the future, two 22 port switches, etc...?

you would be fine with one 1500va for a server and all the networking equipment.

i have 2 servers and half the networking gear on a single 1500va, and the other 2 servers and other half on the other 1500va.

you dont need a 3000va.

3000VA is going to require an L5-30P. I would pass on a Dell 1500VA that is going for 350 if this is for a serious business application and not a home user.

why would pass on 1500va? its 980watts give or take.

hes running one server, and last i talked to him he wasn't running dual psu, which would mean hes got about 500watt max from a computer ( computers wont run at max wattage), and then maybe just maybe 100 watts total from networking gear.

u just need enough backup time to shut down properly or save files.

For a number of reasons.

Is not one server and the server is an unknown configuration. Let alone 3 unknown Xeon based servers (are these dual, quad, single??).

The number of PSU's does not dictate the power draw. The power draw of the remaining equipment is unknown.

Finally a $350 1500VA rackmount UPS from Dell is a complete unknown (guessing line-interactive here) quantity.

No if my butt is on the line I would not be buying cheap unknown 1500VA UPS when we have far too many outstanding variables such as actual power draw, future needs, and quality of random cheap UPS.

Read a post up, says 1 server maybe one more in future.

If you follow his other threads he has yet ot decide on a setup, when i talked to him in PM, he was gonna be running a single server and networking gear.

Which is fine with a 1500va.

If he wanted to add another server he could still use the 1500va, but get a smaller apc for hte networking gear.

No reason to spend 2 grand on a APC for a dentist office with 1 server and maybe 5 workstations

A Dell 1500va is a great product, have used a few, along with other Dell branded products and they all performed great. He can go with a APC 1500va or something but nothing wrong with buying all gear from Dell and getting a great warranty.

AMD needs to decide on what gear he actually is going to use because his first thread hewas gonna use like 4 servers and now he is down to 1.

1 server + networking is fine for a 1500va that gives about 10 minutes of battery.

But like i already mentioned i have 2 servers + 1/2 gear on each of my 1500va rackmounts and it doesn't break a sweat. These are dual psu poweredge servesr, not a tower server like hes going to get.

Proper planning for future expansion is something missed by most people who do this as a hobby as opposed to as a profession. And no I am not following his other threads, I am responding to his requested information in the first post.

The bolded is the reason to not be doing this on the cheap. This is not about a home file server or pet project.

A tower versus rackmount server does not dictate power draw. I am glad you can have 2 servers plus half your network gear work off of one unknown UPS. My job/goal is to make recommendations that work and work right not ones that I get calls to clean up after when the previous person didn't know what they were doing although the pay is nice in those situations. Since I don't want to clean up a mess I would recommend the 5-20P solutions in my previous post over an unknown quality, topology 350 UPS for a dentist office.

I have everything running off APC gear, that isn't unknown........

Honestly whatever AMD wants to do, I have recommended him setups week after week upon his request and he always changes his mind.

I do this as a profession but a 4 person dentist office isn't going to expand all that much to require a second server or a 2grand APC unit.

AMD is just overkilling his setup to the extent where its going to be more complicated then what a professional would do.

Time and time again I have recommended him a Dell Poweredge server with Dual PSU, a APC 1500va, a firewall, and a switch but each week it is something new. This would be all the power he needs for a 3-4 person office with a file server.

But sure if he wants to spend the money go ahead and drop 2 large on that APC unit mentioned, just make sure you have the right plugs, and usually the ones in that size are 220v so make sure you have the right wiring AMD.

I have had more APC units fail then Dell units.

But I honeslty dont care. I have my own clients to worry about, but I would NEVER recommend a 2 grand unit to a small company like what he is going after.

Enjoy!

Who makes the Dell branded UPS?
Dell uses re-branded APC units.

So in effect you are still buying APC.

I have (2) APC 2U 1500VA powering:
(2) quad core xeon servers dual PSU (1 into each ups)
(2) Dell MD1000 15 drive storage arrays (both full, = 30 drives)
(2) cisco 2611XM routers
(3) Dell powerconnect 3348 switches
(1) Dell KVM console unit

And the UPS's only sit at about 50% load. Trust me, the Dell/APC 1500VA ups's are workhorses. And they are only the 15amp versions.

^ Exactly.

Well that about covers that situation and recommendation ;)

I don't believe you have been paying attention at all. Never once were 220v units recommended, the issue with L5-30P versus 5-20P was addressed, and noone recommended a 2k unit. In fact if you read back I recommended against paying 2k for a APC and said if he was going to and had the infrastructure to get the Leibert. APC doesn't make the greatest gear, especially at the prices paid for it.

Lets also go with the SUA1500RM2U is ~ 600 not 350:

The Non-rackmount Dell version is ~550.

don't get what you posted. you are reading too much into my hurried typing on my phone while i was going to another job.

i have used a few hundred APC brand a dozen or so Dell brand, I have had a few APC branded ones fail.

so if i had an even number of each i could give more about reliability, but i would rather have something fail from Dell then APC, all it takes is one email to my Dell rep and we get a new unit out. Usually with other companies it takes more conversation to get a replaced unit.

All I can say is any 1500va unit will be all the poster needs.

Then slow down and read it again so that you do not make any further mistakes in what my point and position are.

.... wow ... lot's of arguing... lol

I guess i'll go along and choose a 1500va model UPS.
Right now, i'm only gonna have one server, but i may add another in the future for another purpose.

I'm looking to rack everything for security purposes, so that no unauthorized staff can get to the equipment which I've invested into.

I will go with one unit and if I expand the servers/switches/whatever, then i'll add a second. One should be plenty. I don't really need more than probably 15 mins run time on this stuff. We don't really get any bad storms or whatnot around here so I should be fine, when the power goes out. If it goes out for longer than planned, then we can temporarly use the old paper and pen technique.

Thanks to all who have put input into this thread. It is greatly appreciated!

P.S. @ Marley1. I've made up my mind, i'm just trying to pick out the right solution and parts. This is a big investment and I don't wanna screw up anywhere. I wanna nail every key point I can, even the smallest ones ;)
