recommend a good 17" LCD

Hey guys I've been outta the loop for a while. My CRT is slowly dying on me so I have decided to take the plunge and buy a decent 17" LCD. I definitely don't want to break the bank on this but I am a moderate gamer so would like something with a decent response time as well as nice color quality. What are the good panels these days? Something in the $250-300 range would be ideal, but please let me know if my idea of pricing is off.
 
well the 12ms panels in the 17" market offer some very good performance all round really, both in terms of pixel response and in colour reproduction. There are some very nice looking models in the 17" market too. I'm not sure of the prices over there in USA with you, but over here, the popular ones i would look at would be:

Samsung 172X
Hyundai Q17+
LG1780U
LG1750H

some nice screens there, all based round either Samsung's 12ms TN panel, or LG.Phillip's 12ms TN panel

The samsung 172x is an EXCELLENT LCD imo. I physically used the 17in sony 16ms LCD and the viewsonic 171B 8ms and the 172x was my fav of the 3. The 171B and 172x are very close in response time in games like counterstrike source and doom 3. The sony wasn't as responsive. Things you don't get from the samsung monitor is the adjustability of the viewsonic. The 171B will rotate and can adjust height more than the 172x. The 172x is generally more cash too, but I found it on sale for 280 when newegg ran a rebate on it so thats what tipped me toward the 172x. I haven't seen any color banding on this monitor at all, and the text is very good as well, easier on the eyes than a CRT. But I'd take a good look at the 171B, its almost in your price range and is very fast for gaming as well. I doubt you'll find a 172x for less than 350 right now since newegg was out of them last time i checked.
 
The 172x looks great. You guys have any recs for 19 inch that won't totally break the bank?
 
Samsung 913N is about £200 over here now!, so perhaps that is available at a good price with you? Also, there are some very nice "budget" models like the LG1915S which offer some excellent performance, but at a very good price (again, around the £200 mark in the UK)
