Looking for a new desk solution. Something that is dark wood, somewhat modern, with a desk draw. I'd like something wide enough for 3 24' monitors and not to thick in depth.

Any ideas?

Wow, yeah that is some desk. I would like a custom desk but I'd be happy with one that I can but that's under 500 and looks simple and clean.

I used a solid wooden door on two file cabinets before I found this jerker desk.
In hindsight, the door/desk had more real estate and an included grommet hole (from the door knob opening).

I'm using a stained solid core door with some 4x4 for legs. Thing is solid as as all hell, and has a ton of real estate, pretty easy to add stuff too if I was so inclined.

While desks like that admittedly have a ton of utility, they are usually hideous and lacking in finished quality.

Oh I'll agree completely! I honestly spent a lot of time on the sanding and staining, because that actually matters to me. It's not perfect but it looks a damn sight better than what I normally see for the door desk thing. Though the 4x4s really weren't the greatest choice, I need to find something that works better than those, even stained and sanded they're still pretty ugly.

As soon as I have the time/money I'd love to do a l3p style desk.

You could always get some metal legs from Ikea and attach those to a nice solid door. You could sand down the edges of the door and make a really decent looking desk after adding the stain of your choice. That's honestly how I think I'd do it if I were so inclined.

I was going to recommend the best computer desk ever, the Ikea Jerker, but of course its not made anymore and it doesn't have a drawer :)

This is what I did. Took the top from an old kitchen table, took about 7 hours to completely sand off the old finish and put on a new stain and bought a set of legs from Ikea and it turned into exactly what I wanted.

I've got one and I think my Galant is better. A lot more real estate for monitors.

Years ago, my dad made me a desk with two 3-drawer dresser kits and a slab of real wood over top screwed on. The top actually extended a few inches behind the dressers. He finished it nicely and it worked well, with plenty of desktop real estate. :)

Some people can pull something like that off and make it look good. Seems like a rare thing though.

Yeah I have been eyeballing the Galant for a while now.

With my Jerker I have two additional shelves and two wings. So I have a lot of verticle space. If I went to a single flat surface, all my junk, printers, monitors and scanners would be spread out all over the place.

If I ever went Nvidia surround I'd drop the Jerker for Galant. Until then, it's all about the Jerker.

1x 32"x80" Solid Core Door - $54 @ Home Depot
2x 8' 4"x4" Douglas Fir Untreated - ~$10 @ Home Depot
1x 8' 2"x4" Douglas Fir Untreated - ~$4 @ Home Depot
4x 1/8" Steel Plates - Free (ish) @ my material's pile
Stain and whatnot - Cheap (ish) @ Home Depot

This is the desk I built for myself. Routed the edges of the door, top and bottom. Routed the bottom edges of the legs and the ends of the footrest.

We're about to replace all the furniture in our house. I bet my wife would flip if I got it all from Ikea, lol. She's picking out all this super expensive shit.

Caretta desks are designed exceptionally well. They have a lot of cable management and nice accessories. carettaworkspace.com
Solid hardwood, ventilation, power, usb, and everything has been worked into the design.

They aren't for the particle board and milk crate desk crowd, but the price is somewhat reasonable when you start shopping for a desk with features.

Sorry, OP wanted a desk under $500. Disregard the above post.

I'd say so. Very nice desks but good lord the price is rather high. I'm certain they'd be worth it provided you could actualy afford one.

Heh, I just make my own desks. Current one looks like this:

Not the best looking but I like it for it's use. Plenty of room for lots of monitors though. I do have a shelf for that receiver and another monitor on the desk now though. I just modify it when I need changes.
