I haven't been much into the OC world, the few times I have tried I've always fried a motherboard or a CPU in a couple months. That being said, my rig finally gave out after 4 or 5 years, and it's time for an upgrade. For my new rig, I'm trying to find something quiet and cool, with as little OC and cost as possible (while still able to last anther 5 years) After looking around, it would seem the core to my system would be:

E8400 (If I can find one)
8800GT (Haven't decided on manufacturer)

After that, I'm just looking for something that will last, Thanks again!

I am in about the same boat,
my last overclocking experience was a PIII 750 MHz to 1GHz but it wasn't really stable, ran hot, blah, blah, blah. after killing two processors, and 4 memory modules I decided it was less headache to stay stock.

The question is how much overclock are you looking for?

It tends to be easier to get a new generation processor with a slower buss speed that you can pump the bus up to the next level, say a 1066 MHz buss processor that you can run at 1333. (or 800 to 1066)
When Overclocking don't skimp on cooling or power supply, because you are stressing the components beyond their intended level, it is easier for them to fail from little stresses.

As always your results may vary.

The C2D E8400 is a great cpu but hard to find. You can however find the Xeon E3110 which is the C2D E8400 with a different microcode and a different name. If the board supports 45nm processors it should have no trouble supporting the Xeon over the C2D. When overclocking newer chips (65nm and 45nm architecture) The max voltage should stay at 1.55v for the 65nm (e6600, e6700, q6600 etc) and 1.45v for the 45nm chips (e8400, e3110,e8500, q9450 etc) Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice for the OC, and solutions for the rarity of the E8400. I'm trying to do as little OCing as possible, none would be ideal, but if I'm missing out on a lot of power from something that won't harm the lifespan, I'll go for it. I'd probably run it on stock cooling for a while.

Any suggestions for Motherboard, manufactor for the Vid Card...Oh and power supply. Looking at the Corsair 650TX (Save a bit of money over the modular version). I think I've decided on G.Skill Ram for the whole set up. Probably DDR2 800, again to make it a bit cheaper.
