currently have logitech 5.1 speakers. think its the z-640 or something. some cheap $80 system. want to get something better and pump up my sound. looking for a 4.1 system for 200 or less. what do you recomend? (whatever i get, im geting an adapter to add to my existing system)


does a sound card really matter? why? do i need a new one? would rather just spend more on speakers.

A sound card matters mostly for higher quality sound reproduction over nice speakers. I'm not sure you'll notice the difference between two sound cards on a lot of consumer PC speakers, assuming neither card is total garbage.
 
i bought my klipsche promedia 4.1 speaker set about 3 years ago and they're still holding up very well. klipsch doesn't sell them any longer but you could find them on ebay used.
i'm very pleased with its sound quality and very good bass although a little boomy but i guess that's a matter of taste.

I just sold my other system..and they had 4.1 Klipsch on em...and yes..they hold up very well..and sound great..ive lost track of how many ppl here asked to buy them.
Its a shame they stopped making them..if you can find some on ebay or what not...spend the money for em.....you wont be dissapointed
 
i am more of thinking computer speaker systems. not quite rich enough to spend $500 on some home audio speakers.
unless i just get 2.1 real speakers that arnt to expensive. what do you think? and i do need a sub. i love bass. i dont need anything super big. i live in an army baracks so it would be pointless to get a $1000 system because i wouldnt be able to max it
so whats a nice 4.1 comp speakers or 2.1 really good speakers. just a pair if they already got nice bass i guess
 
thoes are being sold on ebay for alot cheaper. should i try to snag one? im not sure if i trust ebay tho
 
they would be right. i think this guy is going to add the 4.1 to his 5.1 in hopes of getting 9.2. that won't work because you won't have 9 discrete channels and all you'll be doing is doubling up on mismatched channels, which will ruin any semblance of decent sound you could get from a budget 4.1 or 5.1 setup(which isn't very good usually). the sound card will only matter, as has been said, if you have good enough speakers, and unless that was $200 per satalite speaker, you probably won't hear any subtle sonic differnces.

well "some" dont have a clue what they are talking about.
Ive owned both Klipsch and these 680's and they are both excellent speakers
 
if you're comparing them to the injection molded breakable plastic shells with paper cones that most computers come with, they're fantastic, but that doesn't mean they're actually good speakers.
 
Klipsch ProMedia 4.1, or if you have the space for an second sub and dont mind having to adjust the rear volume separately two 2.1's. (4.2)

i say logitechs are junk because they break a lot..... mine broke after 2 hours, but then again my klipschs only lasted about 2 weeks. HT is good because its much more reliable, so im never going back to PC speakers.
 
Another Vote for the Klipsch. I have the 5.1 Ultra's myself They sound great!! :D connected to onboard sound... :D
 
ill prolly get thoes 2.1 klipsch. and yes im going to add it to my existing 5.1. i know its not going to be 7.1, just sound a little better
 
actually it will probably sound worse. you'll have two good speakers and the rest don't match it sonically, so it won't sound well integrated.
 
you can make it 7.1 if you have a 7.1 soundcard, but BNK is right.

define "mine broke" in what way?..and what model did u have?
 
I have had Logitech Z560s for over a year now and have been nothing but happy with them. My old roomate had the Promedia's 4.1. After a while of testing we came to the conclusion that Klipsch sound brighter....cleaner....however, Logitech sub is MUCH MUCH more powerful then the Klipsch.

So if you want more Boom in your Room, go with Logitechs....if you want clear, brighter sound with less Boom, go Klipsch.

z680s.... the center channel stopped working. the speaker was fine, but other speakers in the center channel output wouldnt work. i was watching a movie and all of a sudden, a loud pop and it was dead.

the klipsches died during a lightning storm (even though they were turned off and plugged into a UPS (uninterrupted power suppy)), and the fuse blew. only problem is that the fuse is internal, so klipsch told me to take them back to best buy. i got a second set, but because i got frustrated with the terrible sound of a 120Hz crossover, i moved over to home theater. now i can use a crossover of 40 Hz and it sounds fantastic.
 
well..im sorry to hear that......the majority of ppl ive spoken to have no complaints with either system...id be a tad annoyed if i were in your shoes too,my 680's run just fine, 5.1 sound runs great...although this is the second set ive owned..the 1st set (out of the box) had a dead amp...id turn the power on..and the amps fuse would blow...went through a 5 pack of fueses tryin to fix it...with no luck..had to get another set through Tiger Direct

that was my whole point. they are practically broken out of the box in many cases :mad: thats why i say they suck. although there are a lot of people out there with working sets, there are also a ton of people who are on their second, third, etc.... set, or like me and just gave up on them.
 
i will say this..the 4.1 Klipsch i sold with my other system were GREAT speakers...i really wanted to upgrade to the Pro Media set when i got rid of that system..but they are still priced to high for my taste..i bought the 680's off tiger direct for 199$..i think thats a decent price for a quality 5.1 system..and the decoder is another nice option to have
 
Decoders aren't worth crap. If you're going to get into decoding, you might as well spring for a $150 reciever with tons more functionality, flexability and longevity.

well....its a computer..not a portable DJ...it works well enough for a pc..i have a homes system that destroys my pc audio..thats not why i bought it...its a decent enough setup for a pc...nothing more..nothing less

that klipsch 5.1 they are selling on thier site is refurbished. think its still good? should i trust it? think i should go for it? because that is saving almost $100 from geting it somwhere else. would it still come in the original box with all the orginal things? no choclate on the remote i hope. whats the disadvantage of geting it refurbished? man.. i really dont want to spend more than 250 on a system.
 
yes..they are..but they come with the same warrenty..so you have nothing to lose..and savings to gain...if i was looking for a new set of pc speakers..id snatch those up in a second

Why only a 90-day warranty?
Because the systems are sold at below cost, the warranty is good for 90 days

I ordered the refurbished Klipsch 4.1 ProMedias straight from Klipsch a couple of years ago. I do not remember if they come in the original box, but they are packed well. The sound quality should be exactly the same. The only difference I could tell between mine and new after thorough inspection inside and out was that they were missing 1 of 8 rubber desk foot things. My speakers are still doing as good as the day I bought them, and I am glad I bought them refurbished (for around $140 iirc). It basically comes down to a warranty consideration. With speakers (at least the Klipschs), I think that most problems will either occur within the first couple of weeks or after the first year.
 
geting the 5500 from dell, with a coupon from ben's bargains, and free shipping, comes to a total of $270. cant see how much the shipping is at the kilpsch website, dont want to make an account yet, but will probably equal to the same price. so which is better? i saw the 5500 geting better reviews and it has more total watts.... but the kilpsch is normaly more expensive...
 
cant go wrong with the 5500's if they are anything like the 680's i have...they will sound great..they replaced the model i have..and im VERY pleased with my speakers
