I'm looking for a medium-sized (70-150ish GB), really fast HDD. I know about WD Raptors, and I know they're loud as fuck, and quite expensive. Does anyone recomend any others?

In a word - no.

'Loud as fuck' - have you heard one before? Sure they are louder, but still not bad.

Does your PC sit on top of the desk? If no, then shouldn't be a problem.

A close friend has a 32 GB running, and the thing sounds like it's about to explode. I don't know if newer ones have gotten quieter, but jeez, the thing was loud.

And yes, my PC does sit on my desk.

Just to clarify:

I know Raptors exist, I know they're bitchin' fast. But by "fast", I mean overall good performer. This HDD will house my OS and games when my new rig is done, and I'd like something fast but not very big (i.e. easy to back up in full). If there isn't anything that compares, I'm going to buy a 76 GB Raptor, but I thought I'd look at some other options first.

And a good enough reason as any: http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1031259399&postcount=6

I would get the Raptor..I have 4..fast and quiet....all 4 are still running as good as the day i bough them....2 of them are 4 years old..2 of them are 2 years old...

I give them good clean power, and keep them cool....thats all they ask :)

My Raptor isnt any louder then my old 500gig Maxtor drive. I heard the "Raptors are load" stories and was hesitant in buying one. I did anyway and I hardly hear it. My computer is on the floor underneath my desk and only when im about to go to sleep do I hear it sometimes.

The only times you hear them are during heavy seeks (which ARE louder than most 7200rpm drives), but the sound isn't annoying and I actually like the sound they make. But thats me :)
