ok, so in april of 07 i'm going on a honeymoon to the caribbean. long story short, i want a camcorder to capture the moments or whatever. I have a 5mp canon camera (510) and i've been very satisfied w/ the quality (except when in low light conditions). i've read some about canon, sony and panasonic camcorders and i think sony and canon are the best.

some requirements
  • HD would be nice(i have a 1080i hdtv), but i haven't seen any video clips for quality comparisons and it might be out of my price range
  • mini-dvd seems good, but i've heard that HD isn't possible w/ that format
  • still pictures MIGHT be taken w/ it, so that would be an added feature but not required
  • Hard Drive based camcorders seem too limiting, so i think thats out
  • video quality is most important, followed by optical zoom and then battery life

so what do you guys think/recommend? thanks!

What's limiting about a harddrive camcorder? I just got a DCR-SR100 and love it.

What is your budget?
Are you going to edit your work? as far as post processing?

Some low budget camcorders will do an excellent job, but if you are into more advanced filming, you will feel limited. At the same time, people buying expensive toys never get to fully take advantage of their high tech cams, and just sink money for the sake of having the best toy.

A few things that matter when looking for camcorders:

-The size of the sensor. Ideally, a 3ccd chip is preferable, but some single sensor chips can be preferred if they are of a good size. The bigger the sensor, the better low light performance you will get.

-I wouldn't recommend mini-dvd as the maximum reachable bandwidth on that medium is 9mbps. The best medium for consumer camcorder miniDV in my opinion. They are dirt cheap to get, re-usable, reliable and provide a maximum bandwidth of 25mbps.

-Ergonomics: make you get to play with your camcorder before purchase. It has to feel like butter in your hand.
