Hello, I previously had this set-up

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1735505&highlight=

now my subwoofer and my receiver is gone,

I'm looking to buy both, but I still have those 5 energy speakers.

I'm a total noob when it comes to audio. my old subwoofer was an 8" 100W subwoofer, and my old receiver was an old 140wx7 channel system.

looking at slickdeals I found a Polk Audio PSW505 12-Inch Powered Subwoofer for $179 on amazon/newegg, im wondering if its good?

also, what receiver would you recommend?

I don't need high end audio, but I want something that'll sound good. Don't want to spend too much if possible.

I would mainly play games on this set-up, but I do listen to music and shows as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

that polk sub is pretty good for the money

receiver wise... kinda depends on what deals you find

my wife and I got a Yamaha RX-V573 on sale for $299 a couple months ago... I am very pleased with the sound quality .... the user interface is CLUNKY...especially the networking stuff but the SQ is excellent ... it does have only 4HDMI inputs however which could be a hassle depending on how many devices you need to hook up to it. We have only 3 devices we needed it to be hooked up to so it works out good.

I guess it is an old model now ... probably why it was $299 @ fry's ... it looks like amazon wants $350~ for it however

i'd get the Bic America F12 which is not much more than the sub you are already looking at. If you want cheaper than maybe a Dayton sub 1200 from parts-express. as for a receiver, i'd check accessories4less.com see whats on sale.

Those Yamaha receivers are pretty good for the money and ya the new ones are out now. I just got my uncle an RX-V475 for a nice 30% discount ($280) but that was an exclusive offer to me from Newegg through email. It'll be a little while before the prices come down but you might luck out and find them being promoted somewhere. Sign up for Newegg's E-blast promotional newsletters. And the Polk PSW505 is a solid choice for the money.

Also good choices, but keep in mind the PSW505's amp is 300W RMS whereas the BIC F12 is 150W RMS. The Klipsch RW-12d is also on sale right now for $280 shipped.

I have my Yammy (RX-V573) hooked up to some vintage B&W V202 speakers and I'm just put on some music... really nice ... I have a 4year or so old pioneer AV receiver as well and the yammy just kills it for Sound Quality.

I am really pleased with this thing for what we paid for it....

oh yeah... what happened to your other sub and receiver?

It sounds like the PSW505 is the cheapest/best choice right now, so ill go with that.

I was hoping for a receiver to be around the 250 range, maybe 300, I don't need anything fancy. just a good amount of volume and be able to connect 5.1 speakers. (and compatibility of course). I don't need to rock the house.

what happened to them is sort of a long story, the short version is that theres some really nasty people in the world.

PSW505 without question. The Dayton 1200 is no longer made by the same manufacturer , lots of people are buying them now and finding out the hard way that they are no longer the incredible budget deal they once were. I would advise , for now , against buying them as it seems the quality has taken a nose dive.

The PSW505 is pretty powerful and it will shake the paint off your walls if you want it to. It hits well , but it doesn't do extreme sub bass as well as other subs. However you'll have to pay for that as many subs suffer that same issue. But unless you want absolute perfect detail in your movies , most music is above the range where such sub bass is a requirement to hear everything your paying for.

The Polk at that price is pretty damn hard to beat , unless you double the price (or close to that) you probably won't find better.

well.. sorry about your troubles

i think I have a winner for you..

$289.99 the RX-V473 from newegg w/ free shipping... model down (old model but meh) from mine.. supposedly very similar sound and features (but 5.1) vs 7.1

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=82-115-374&IsVirtualParent=1

+1. There isn't a whole lot added to the newer models. You get an additional HDMI MHL input, 1.09 lbs. heavier, 192KHz FLAC support (vs 96KHz on older model), DC out, optional Bluetooth adapter. That's about it. You still get the same great sound (Burr-Brown DAC) and YPAO setup.

Looks like it sold out before I could buy and now its $399 :/ are there any other good ones?

bummer on the sell out...

sorry...

well money is money and i get it ...if it was me I might try to come up w/ the $50 for the RX-V573 @$349 from amazon..

but if that is too steep i hear ya..

if you live near a fry's they have a onkyo 7.2 receiver for $249 in their friday add here at least.... might want to spring for the extended warranty cause I hear bad things about hdmi board failures from onkyo however.

if you are willing to go refurb you might take a look at denon over at accessories for less

they have this one.. for $229 should be pretty nice

http://www.accessories4less.com/mak...ver-w/AirPlay-3D-ready/1.html#!specifications

they are authorized dealer and whatnot as well.

be careful if u decide to buy online Pioneer for example doesn't honor warranties from Amazon (not auth dealer) not sure about newegg???

and it pains me to say I'd probably steer clear of the Pioneer AV receivers cause they don't sound that great.... it makes me sad cause i own a metric f*** ton of vintage pioneer stereo gear that sounds great.

thanks for the quick reply,

sadly I don't have a fry's in my state.. and I couldn't find anything local (craigslist) either

im wondering if this is any good? the refurb or non refurb.

Yamaha RX-V373 5.1. Its basically half price of the other one.

http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-RX-V37...ef=sr_1_3?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1368820051&sr=1-3

if it isn't I guess ill take your recommendation and go with the $350 RX-V573.

thanks for all the help guys, it'll sound great!

Take a look used. If you can manage without HDMI you can pick up a fantastic receiver from 6-8 years ago for $250... Look at the Denon 3805, 3803, similar Yamahas etc. Build quality is excellent as the slightly older stuff (at least for Denon) was built in Japan, now they've moved production over to China. You'll get more watts, better sound etc.

Personally I'd never buy a new receiver when there's so many incredible deals out there on slightly older stuff

well the price is right on the 373 (espcally the refurb)

if you don't mind the loss of 4K pass thru (and u probably don't) / networking and spring clips on the center and surround speakers (vs. all banana plug compatible on the 473 and up.

I didn't listen to the 373 when we got our 573 cause in our case they where both the same price cause of the sale on the 573 (the 473 was amusingly more expensive at fry's at the time)

but this review is rather good.

http://www.whathifi.com/review/rx-v373

for your purposes i'm not sure the 573 is worth 2x times the money.... when i got mine for $300~ it was sort of a slam dunk based on internet / local pricing at the time.... amazon is an authorized dealer for yammy btw also so that is kewl as the warranty should be good it is one years on the refurb / vs 2 on new non refurbs. but is see for $18.99 u can bump it to 2yrs..

I'm totally torn on the refurb vs new on this one...i have had decent luck w/ refurbs personally but they are a bit more risky...

The regular Pioneer receivers' build and sound quality is disappointing. However, Pioneer's Elite receivers are another breed altogether and do sound really good. I still use a 2009 Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH that has served me extremely well over the years. Believe it or not I paid $430 for it shipped around the time it came out. I bought it online and of course Pioneer doesn't honor the warranty but I knew that going in. I was confident enough in their Elite receivers to suspect that I wasn't going to be needing it. I was right. I would say that the equivalent Elite receiver today would probably be the SC-61.

The PSW505 got delivered today. its friggin huge! it doesn't even fit where the older one used to.

I just ordered a 573 yamaha for $271 used like new from amazon warehouse deals.

thanks for all the help guys,
its gonna sound great! :)

nice... I hope u like the V573 I really like mine very much... I find the sound quality compares very well to my vintage Pioneer Integrated Amps (SA-710 and SA-410) and my SX-780 receiver.

just leave all the eco mode crap off however... kills SQ / Bass... I like mine with the straight or Direct modes... I do not personally care for any of the "sound enhancement" modes

You'll love that sub. Just remember to do the "sub crawl" (Google it) and find its optimum position in your room if need be. Get ready for some nice deep as fuck bass thumpin :)

Great choices. Enjoy man!

You guys inspired me to upgrade my Denon receiver. I'll be sure to join the party and upgrade to a V573 whenever I successfully sell it off.

Wow, im such a noob.

I have no idea how to hook all of these up.

I can hear my fronts (L/R) but nothing else. been trying for an hour, looked at manual, online, etc. how can i hear them all?

edit: i have all the speakerwire in the right place. just not sure what to do from the back of the receiver to my sound card (xonar DG)
I sort of forgot how my old one was.

oh... hmm .. as i recall the old receiver you had was awesome but old model that probably had different connectivity options..

and I think...(i could be wrong..but I think I am right) you may be somewhat boned (sorry)

so... the xonar DG has optical out but it only support 2 channel on the toslink connection

and the receiver does not seem to have analog connections for 5.1

so....near I can figure you have a couple options

if your video card has HDMI audio you could get the 5.1 using the HDMI to the receiver and then from the receiver to the monitor (or you can also not have a monitor and extend ur desktop to a non existent monitor ) to get the audio.

you can just run stereo to the receiver and use the PCM crapola to get simulated surround... not my favorite option.

if you motherboard has onboard sound and optical out you could check and see if the onboard optical out supports 5.1

or you could replace the sound card with one that has 5.1 optical out (with DTS or DD Live) the xonar DS/DSX have this..the dg does not).

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...a&cm_sp=&AID=10440897&PID=3891137&SID=rewrite

this is my motherboard. It has onboard 7.1, will that work? I also have a GTX 580 with MiniHDMI port.

I thought that the reciever would be like the old one and just work right away =/
like to plug three yellow/white audio into the receiver and plug the 3 single ones from those to the soundcard ( i guess thats the part about the analog 5.1 connections?)

I don't want to simulate the 5.1 going from stereo ---> software 5.1.

and I rather not spend more money on a sound card.

I tried the HDMI, I hear all the speakers, but there are a few problems,

1)I'm not sure if the sound quality could be better? its connected to the graphic card? doesnt make 100% sense to me.

2) it says i have two monitors.. I tried making the 2nd one 1x1 resolution or something but it doesnt seem to work, and its forcing my gpu into 3d clocks which makes the fan spin high.

and 3) im not exactly sure where to control all the settings for the sound system, like for the onboard realtek there is a control panel software, same for the asus xonar DG.

id be set if i could figure all those out... I feel like I just bought a buncha stuff that doesn't really work =/

hey what's up..

so you can configure the HDMI audio from the audio control panel (select the speaker config and set that as required)

and then in the properties configure that as desired

other thoughts have you used the YAPO mic thing to have it auto configure the speakers for you listening area...

and then I find I like my speakers and RX-V573 best when I have it set to "straight" or "Direct"

I **think... not sure... that the gigabyte mb's that list Dolby® Home Theater support 5.1 via DD Live on the optical out.

so you could give it a shot since if you want.

in my case i have my pc hooked up with HDMI for multi channel stuff (movies ..whatever) and I am using the toslink from my Xonar DG to the Yammy also for music... some will say "you are nuts" and that is fine..but for music I only want 2ch anyways and I think it sounds better using the optical for music... you can search HDMI vs Toslink Jitter if you are so inclined.

Interesting to know that there is enough jitter to notice an audible difference between HDMI and Toslink. Do you think this is a relative to the specific motherboard or audio chipset?

yeah i see the little thing, ill try to use it tomorrow.

that dolby option i have is true 5.1? not 2.1 emulated? if so, i think that will work just fine!

(when i press test, it seems to only test 2 speakers for some reason)

its a little too late to test, but I think i hear everything fine from each speaker when in-game. (2.1 music seems to be emulated to 5.1, but that doesn't really bother me)
Do I want to check the box w/ Dolby prologic IIx?
When I check Disable All Sound Effects, the 2 tabs over of dolby 5.1 test fails to run at all.

By the way, what do i do with the PSW505's knob of lowpass (Hz)? it doesn't seem to affect anything, it also has Phase 0degree or 180degree? I connected it w/ LFE.

I also have some options on the receiver, that im not sure how to optimize.

there are soo many options!

ill try more tomorrow, I was disappointed at first, but it seems like the onboard audio is working fine! :D:D:D

thanks for everything!

Set the lowpass knob to the highest value (i.e. 120hz or thereabouts) since the receiver will handle the lowpass setting internally. Use HDMI and make sure your receiver is configured for 5.1 speakers, my yamaha actually shows an icon for each speaker that is configured on the front panel below the volume level. The YPAO will tell you if you need to adjust the phase or not. Every speaker should play from the windows volume config box test, if it doesn't you aren't getting surround output.

So, I just learned that Dolby Digital Live 5.1 isnt true 5.1, it takes a 2.0 connection, compresses it, makes it lower quality, encodes it somehow and then gives it out as 5.1...

the miniHDMI made me have 2 screens so my mouse would go out into an abyss, made higher temps, higher fanspeed because it was in constant full 3d clocks.

Im thinking, Can I just have the miniHDMI w/o DVI into a minihdmi to hdmi adapter, from that to receiver, from there into the screen and get both uncompressed 5.1 sound and 60hz/1080p video? I think that would solve ALL my problems!

edit: so I tried this, and it seems to be working (although the surround L/R seem... weak? not as loud?). it also seems to have a little delay each time something starts to play, the reciever where it says L/R/C/SW/SL/SR blinks (as in, displays it, then clears, then displays it again) and i hear the subwoofer starting/stopping a little, for no reason... I think that only happens when im hearing a short sound, like the default windows beep, logon, logoff, or when i test the speakers, but I don't think it happens in games..

I also got something really surprising! A few days ago I tried the evga precision X OCer to OC my screen for the first time, it could only go to 66hz.

After doing the above thing w/ minihdmi I can now do 74hz on this monitor, I never ever expected that. Awesome!

When you tried this, did you actually have 2 different video outputs on your video card connected to something? That the only way you'd normally end up with 2 screens. You can disable the second monitor in either the NVIDIA control panel "setup multiple displays", or in Win7 by right clicking on the desktop selecting "Screen Resolution" and changing the setting for multiple displays. I believe that receiver supports video passthrough when its powered off, so it should be possible to survive with only a single HDMI cable connected to your monitor. It's also worth mentioning that at least on my Yamaha RX-471, your PC HDMI needs to be connected to HDMI1 input on the reciever, since none of the other inputs seems to pass EDID information of devices connected to the receiver back to your video card.

Yes, i had both the DVI and miniHDMI connected. When I tried to disable the 2nd monitor I couldn't get the sound.

I just shut the receiver off and it does indeed support video pass-through when its off!

""your PC HDMI needs to be connected to HDMI1 input on the reciever, since none of the other inputs seems to pass EDID information of devices connected to the receiver back to your video card.""

I have it connected to HDMI4 right now. im not even sure what EDID information is. but it seems to be currently working fine... do I need to change it?

ill keep testing it to see if its actually working as intended. the only problem i see right now is that it cant play audio that is only 0-2 seconds long, the reciever blinks (on/off) the whole L/R/SW/C/SL/SR picture a few times, and makes some crackeling sound, but when i play a game, or listen to music (longer than the 0-2seconds) it seems to be fine.
