Reciever Not Talking to Computer

I recently attempted to setup a pioneer vsx-1019-ah reciever for my HTPC but have had nothing but grief. It seems the reciever won't consistenly talk to my computer properly no matter what I do.
I have HDMI out from the comp to the reciever and HDMI to my tv. While connected in this fashion I don't see the bootup screen and I don't get audio. It claims the HDMI audio is not plugged in, though it obviously is. While connected directly to the tv though, it works fine. I have gotten it to work through the reciever though multiple times but it never lasts. Sometimes just the boot screen and sometimes both work but I never really change anything to accomplish this. For instance, today I had it plugged in to the tv and then plugged it back into the reciever and cycled through hdmi amp->through->amp and I got sound and boot screen. But then I shut down the computer and it reverted back to it's previous not working state and that fix doesn't do anything anymore. This has happened a few times and is incredibly hard to troubleshoot. Vista also tells me every once in a while that I won't get audio because I am using an hdmi to dvi connection or something to that affect but I have all the settings in the bios correct according to gigabyte.
I have the lastest drivers and bios, I did a fresh vista install, I called ATI, Gigabyte, and Pioneer and they all blamed each other. Does anyone here have any ideas?

Have you tried another HDMI cable? It's true that you don't need an expensive cable, but it's an option to try.

If you break it down to the bare minimum, you can rule out drivers. If you're not getting a picture during boot up (and you're supposed to -- some cards don't work with HDMI until the drivers are loaded) then the issue appears to be between your video card output and your TV input. I would guess that would be made up of two HDMI cables and the receiver.

When you get a picture, is the receiver in passthrough or decode mode? It looks like it has an option of both.

I see two problems.

ATI = lolwtf drivers
Pioneer = EDID and handshaking issues

Well I'm not exactly sure as I can't reproduce the problem but I just switched around the inputs and it is working. Go figure. But now a new problem come to light, I am getting very low subwoofer signal from the computer. I have it cranked up on the sub and in the receiver but it isn't very strong at all and it should be blowing me away. Any ideas on this one? Is there a vista setting for lowpass or anything?
