I have a Yamaha RX-V377 that started making a humming noise in all speakers. This noise occurs whether the receiver is set to mute or not. It does it anyways.

Any idea what this might be? I unplugged all inputs and outputs to no real avail to see if it was some kind of ground looping.
 
You covered my first suggestion. My RX-V471 had that when a staple was grounding out.

When I was doing research on my noise I came across a lot of threads stating that a hum is common when the receiver is on its way out. A component inside is failing, for instance. I am not sure how much of it I believe though.

My suggestion is plugging it into another receptacle, on a different breaker. Maybe a new appliance or anything plugged into the same breaker (maybe overloaded?) is causing it.
 
Try disconnecting all of the speakers, there could be a stray wire causing a ground issues on one of them. Connect one speaker and see if it hums.

My previous HK receiver started doing this shortly before it died :(
 
Tried different outlet with extension cord, and have tried disconnecting speakers, still does it.

Guess I will give Yamaha RMA a try... judging by google, this is going to be a mess.
 
Turn off receiver then press and hold power button on receiver till it turns on and then powers off it will reset the unit.
 
For one final test I took it across the entire house, no speakers plugged in, and hooked in headphones, same hum is heard in headphones. She's got to goto Yahama.
 
Would you please post back on your RMA experience afterwards? I'm curious.
I just purchased a Yamaha Aventage 2030 receiver.
 
Check the unit is earthed on the power side if the plug has one. Swap out power lead if you can. Could be a capacitor about to die or a dodgy potentiometer

Can't swap out the power cable or anything. Unit is like, 3 months old, not going to go too crazy on it. Will just let Yamaha deal with it

Tried it with no speakers and just headphones. Same thing.

It took a decent amount of time to get a RMA # from Yamaha, but I am working on sending back.

Told me it will be like a month until it can be repaired.

Awesome.
