Reciever/HDAudio System

receiver and front speakers first. sub can come later.

for receiver: ppl have different preferences on what receivers to use. for me? i would pick from hk,denon,marantz, and maybe a panny. but that's me. also shop around and make sure u find the model w/ the appropiate conncetions and specs u need.

for front speakers: again, this really depends on u. for me? its klipsch, paradigm, onix, mirage, energy, definitive

if u need a sub now: the most popular subs that go boom boom rumble rumble are svs and hsu. i'm sure there are many other respectible brands, but these 2 brands are the most popular and recommended
 
Check out www.audioholics.com and www.avsforum.com under their speakers and receivers sections. Audioholics has some recommended systems. AVS forum has discussions on the best budget sub, receiver, speakers, etc.

Right now on Amazon, their Mission speakers are on sale for 50% off. Mission,s gotten some decent reviews but whether someone likes/dislikes the way a certain speaker sounds, unless its utter crap like Bose, is mostly a matter of personal taste. I would definitely listen before you buy with some movies and music to the speakers and closest in power in receiver to what you want before buying or be sure whereever you buy from has a return policy in case you don't like the sound of what you order.

www.av123.com has some good deals on Rocket speaker (their own brand).

Also check out ecoustics.com for reviews of audio equipment and speakers.

If the quality of the audio you're outputing to a better system isn't all that great (say a lower sample rate mp3 vice some lossless codec or higher sampel rate mp3), you might think it sounds worse but due to the recording. Better equipment tends to highlight flaws in a recording.
