So I pick up my new iPhone tonight and I was wondering if there are any apps besides the popular ones that are advertised everywhere that people feel are must have hidden gems.
~Thanks

A few must haves for me are
evernote: sync notes with your iphone, computer and web (requires a free account at evernote.com)
AroundMe: Find places near you, bar, gas stations etc
Flixster: See what movies are showing near you
Pandora: Online radio
ShoZu: take photos and automatically upload them to TONs of online sites, blogs etc
TouchTerm: SSH client for the iphone
TipStar: calculate tips
Yelp: A city guide in your pocket, find reviews from normal people for just about anything, food, stores, mobie theaters, skate parks etc.

Google Mobile app with voice search
Pandora
LastFM
SnapTell Explorer
Twitterrific( if you use twitter)
Facebook mobile app
Airme( take photo with camera and automatically uploads to your flickr account)
Shazam
Google earth
earthscape

My Top 5 apps are... (btw are all free from the app store)

Flycast - Stream movies from Wifi or 3g
CheckPlease - Calculate Tip
LightSaber - hehe, gotta try it. It's great if you're a SW nerd
Galcon Lite - A decent time killer game. Keeps your interest
Flixster Movies - App to see what movies are out and what time they're playing and also latest dvd releases.

Why do you need tip calculators? My iPhone has a built-in calculator.

its a lot easier typing in a total for the check and instantry getting a tip amount for

average service
good service
great service

Mikeblas, remember, some people havent always lived in the US. My wife for example is from the UK where it is NOT considered a requirement to tip your server. Plus if you're ever at a restaurant and have a couple drinks too many, you don't want to sit around making sure you calculated the tip right. you want to be right and be done with it.

Personally I base everything off of 10%, if the server/service sucks, 10% it is, if its good, more than 10%, if its great, usually 20% or more.

Of course. I haven't always lived in the US, either, and have traveled extensively in cultures where tipping is not expected and cultures where it's actually an insulting suggestion.

My suprise is not at remembering to tip; my suprise is at the inability to do simple math in order to compute a tip--even when using a calculator.

dude get off your freaking high horse, no one said they don't know how to use a calculator, you in your infinite wisdom assumed it.

some people like using stuff to make their life a little easier

if they didn't why would they own an iPhone instead of the free phone that comes with the contract? lol

I really like luxtouch - basically a very simple version of risk. Super simple, free, and great replay value.
I also like pageonce so I can check my credit card statements for false/fraudulent charges when I'm on the throne. This is assuming, of course, that I'm not playing luxtouch.

Also, I agree with the above - take the total and divide by .xx where xx is the percent tip you wish to leave, not that hard lol

TBH I was just arguing for the sake of arguing. Since I can agree with both sides lol. I'd use the calculator before I open up that program.

although if we're splitting the bill it's awesome. calculates the tip AND how much each person should pay ;)

And finding a 15% tip is not really much different than dividing by seven. Even for someone who "sucks at math lol", given a calculator, it should be a trivial operation. With only a pen and paper, it's math that I'd expect a fourth grader to complete.

I find the aggressive defense of the tip calculator confusing because I'm coming at the issue from that of an application developer. I'd never write such an application because I think it's redundant and has low draw or need, and therefore not worth the time. How can I decide which application to write if I have such a poor feel for what people want?

Well, looking at how much money pet rocks made, I'd say you should reevaluate your target audience.

Dear Christ. Simply move the decimal to the left and you arrive at the magical value of 10%. Have we become so utterly tech-dependent that we cannot handle rudimentary maths?

Apps I did not see mentioned:

Wikipanion
myLite - cool flashlight/strobe
Shazam - identifies any song in mere moments, and keeps a list
Sportacular - every conceivable sport stat
iBeer - never gets old

Hope you enjoy your new toy!

Indeed, I should. I figured people who could spend $2500 on a phone would be literate. If I don't have to think of things that are both useful and novel to have sales, then it seems the bar is far lower than I had originally thought.

Boy oh boy.

I guess my CalculateHowLongAnAppleThreadDegenerates.app is broken.
