Recent experiences with Headphones / Computer Audio

Recently got some Audioengine HD3 speakers and slapped a Topping E30 DAC into it with some silver RCA phonos I have had for years (it was those or some Furukawa FD phono RCA cables that cost like £250 back in 1992).

Rather lovely little combo.

Got two new things in.

Nova Pro Omni. Will do a comparison review for it.

And Yu9 Que to see if it really is a giant killer people claim.

I've been trying the Beats 360 and really like them.

beats-360-desk.jpg

They're still bass-forward (surprise, it's Beats), but considerably clearer in the mids and highs. I find them great with dance music and rap, but surprisingly good for subtler music like classical and jazz. No one would call them neutral or audiophile-grade, but the brand isn't pretending they are.

The ANC is good though not top-of-class, and the battery life is very healthy (a claimed 32 hours, which holds up in my experience).

And straight-up: I'm an absolute sucker for the customizable ear cups and headband. I can add some flash if I want, but this also means I don't have to choose between comfort and workout-ready; I can replace my sweaty knit cups for faux leather ones when I'm working.

The catches: there's no wired audio (not even over USB-C), and it's hard to use the on-device controls by feel alone. And the official $50 price for an ear cup kit is steep — if it weren't for the temporary $10 price it'd be hard to justify spending more.

You might want to hold off if the $350 price for the Beats 360 is tough to swallow. Bose and Sony should be more accurate and might cost less. However, Beats loves to put headphones on sale... if these go for $300 or less, it's worth snapping them up.

Picking up a Steelseries Alias to use as a mic in my PC. I was tempted to get a pair of nova pro Omni’s, but I can’t bring myself to use headphones that have a coloured tone after using good neutral studio closed backs. (Sometimes I’ll noodle in Ableton while I’m gaming and having a coloured sound is bad for mixing).

over time I just get more fond of my very vintage 1980~ SX3600(Japan) and early 90s JBL L1(USA) bookshelf speakers ... I bought at estate sales for $80 + $50 approx about 15yrs ago almost now... Still enjoy this set up very much.
