Recent 980x CPU overheat question

Just put this together about 2 months ago and Recent 980x CPU overheat question.

I don't hear well (understatement - my fans are blasting away in the antec 1200 case and I don't hear a thing & video card fans at 65% set there by default) and had not noticed that my pwr_fan control was not supplying power to the side fan pointing at my 2 video cards from the side panel. My system then shut down and I could not figure out why and I tried to turn it back on and it shut off again right after booting into windows.

Then it would not start but all the lights on the mobo were on - I had once seen all red ones on the video cards but only once and I could still not figure out what was wrong (could not hear that the fan was not running). I got it running after cmos reset and it turns off again.

I then noticed the fan was not spinning and tried another in the same pwr_fan control plug on the mobo and it did not work either. I placed the both fans in an opt_fan control plug and both worked.

I then presed the reset cmos switch and got it running after a few tries and monitored the temps in the bios and it looked OK at stock speed and temp listed as 26c at stock. As soon as I changed any of the bios settings - even just the fan control the cpu temp started to go up - turned red - I turned it off quickly - I noticed in the voltage section of the bios that it was placing 1.4 v on the cpu but I could see that it was set to auto since I had not changed it. Since it was overheating so quickly it might have been getting more voltage than that but I could see the temp steadily climb so I don't think it was too much voltage else it would go within seconds since I am on AIR

The board then seemed to get worse and no lights at all.



1) ASUS is doing an RMA on the Rampage III Extreme

2) I had only restarted the computer a number of times until I noticed there was an issue and from my description it was an electrical problem - overvolting the CPU but not too much as it got into windows a few times but it did overheat.


So my question comes down to this. ( # 3 )

3) Should I consider the CPU has to be replaced as well? Or should it have survived these few attempts at restart and overheat with a quick auto shutdown and some shutdowns were so fast that they must have been directly related to an electrical short somewhere as I had said the pwr_fan control plug was not supplying power when this all started.

I can wait until the new mobo arrives and test the CPU in the new mobo or try an RMA on the CPU? Any insight to how sensetive the 980x is? Physically the mobo looks OK - no marks, deformations, breaks in anything, and the CPU Chip looks OK as well - no discolorations...


Any help?

Can't hear my computer, try to build something good and have trouble with it probably because I could not hear the fan's one or more was NOT running.


Any input on my question?

cpu should be fine.. was probably something set wrong in the bios.. 1.4v is right at the limit of the processor so you should be fine.. my guess is that evga didnt have the default voltage set right in the bios for that processor and probably a bios update may have solved the problem..

with the new board check the voltage.. make sure its set right or you can manually set it yourself.. the processor is good up to 100C so nothing really to worry about if the temps increase.. the chip will protect its self and shut off if it has to.. next time check all your fans.. if you can here them put your hand near the fan.. either tap it with your finger lightly so you know its actually spinning... always the first thing i do with gpu fans since i cant really see it since my computer sits on the floor..

At least with ASUS sending me a new mobo by RMA I won't be out of touch for long.
I could not really deal with a large expense since I need the computer and just upgraded only 2 months ago from my last one (new mobo and new cpu). It's a main source of entertainment and my job description is a computer programmer so not having it is a bummer.

I don't watch TV as I can't hear it and I hate sub text during a movie.
With the computer at least I can adjust some special headphones I have well enough with the sound card in order to listen to a move in some comfort. Lets me put low sounding explosions in the left ear and higher music sounds like signing in the right ear.

I think something went out with the power management on the mobo as adjusting fan speed caused immediate overheat to start on the CPU not even letting me get to adjusting anything else. In checking voltages in the bios I could see just over 1.4 on the CPU but in the bios setting where you actually set it it was 1.1 something at default. Strange but at least ASUS is sending a new one.
