Hey folks, a long time ago in 2006 I bought a 7900GS. Great card. Then it died in 2008. Then I discovered eVGA's magically 30 day rule(they implemented that 20 days prior to me purchasing the card. It was news to me)...I called and pleaded and they guy took pity and sent me an 8800GTS 320mb. Nice little upgrade. Then it died in 2012. I called eVGA again, assuming the prior guy honored the original lifetime warranty versus an exception. Long story short, they are sending me an 550Ti.

No more warranty.

I'm not complaining, I haven't spent money of graphic card in 6 years. So I hit the forums looking for people with a 550Ti. Almost no one has it. So here is my question. My rig is humble, my screen is 1680x1050. What would you do with a 550Ti? Hold out for something else? Sell it?

With those specs, I would sell it and upgrade to something more comparable with your platform (depending on your budget...?), possibly something in the 570/670 lines if you are a nVidia fan, or if you like AMD, you can always hit the 7850 or 7950s.
 
550ti is a huge upgrade over the 7900 but I would sell it and put that toward a 670ish card.
 
I have debated getting another eVGA Lifetime card...so far it would appear they only have a few 560/570/580 variety with the lifetime badge. Pricey upgrade...considering rumor is a 660 will be in our future.
 
I'd have to agree with everyone else in regards to selling it and getting something a little newer/faster. ATI's 7850 seems like a deece card for the price...
 
I'd say sell the 550Ti and get something newer/stronger. Look around in the FS section for a 560Ti or 570 or a 580 if you can find one that cheap.
 
Iv owned a 2gb 460, a 1gb 550 ti and a 1gb 560 ti and the card iv been happiest with is the 550 ti. Its got an excellent TDP to performance ratio and with its low TDP it means you can have a really quiet graphics card.

Do you have a link for the exact card they would be sending you, what games do you currently play and is noise and heat an issue for you?

that makes no sense whatsoever as the 460 and 550 ti have nearly the same power consumption but the 460 has better performance. and the 560 ti also has better performance to power consumption ratio than the 550 ti too.
 
What :confused:, the 560 Ti has a TDP of 170W, the 460 has a tdp of 160W and the 550 Ti has a TDP of 116W. Thats a massive difference.

With a 460 or 560 you are having to cool nearly a third more. Hes playing games at 1680x1050 and we dont know what games yet, could be peggle lol.

look at reviews as advertised TDP means little. the 460 and 550 ti are nearly identical in actual power usage and the 560 ti adds more performance than it does power usage so all of your claims were incorrect. if he is playing modern games then he would do good to sell the 550 ti and get something faster.





and here you can see the 550ti has the WORST performance per watt of the three cards you talked about.

Well he asked for opinions so i gave him mine. Iv owned a 560, 460 and 550 and the worst card for cooling and noise was the 560, followed by the 460 and the clear winner for me is the 550.

In my opinion if heat and noise is an issue then stick to the 550 TI. If heat and noise is not an issue then get a 560 TI. But remember its just an opinion of someone who has actually owned these cards.

but you sated the 550 ti had the best performance to power consumption ratio and that part was incorrect.

Appears to be slightly OCed from stock.

Based on my knowledge of these cards, I can expect it to run cooler than the 8800GTS and run everything a little smoother. And the 550Ti is the midget of the family with most characteristics but lacking in horsepower of its bigger brothers.

Based off most people's suggestions I should sell it that would yield maybe $100. best I can tell that leaves me picking up a small bill and the nearest thing is a 560 (non-ti).

I'm tempted, but with the AMD series dropping like its hot I'm curious where the 'bang for the buck' will land within the next few weeks.
 
Lol ok your correct. My point was that anyone can pull a pretty chart of the internet to support there views. Once again iv owned these cards and used them for months at a time whereas a review site will have them in an open test bench for what maybe a full 2 hours lol. But anyway it doesn't matter as i think hes set for selling it anyway.

skeeder iv no idea how much stuff sells for in america so cant really help there but if i was you then id keep the 550 TI. Sell you raptor drive and combine the money you would have spent on a gpu upgrade with the raptor money and buy an SSD. This will give you a faster, cooler and quieter pc than what you have now and it should also use less energy.
