well,i've been debating this for awhile of rebuild my Computer.
Now:
Abit KT-7 Non Raid
Vantec ION 400watt PSU
1.0ghz Duron
ThermalTake Volcano 7
768mb of PC-133 SDRAM
Ati Radeon 9500 Pro Vid Card
SoundBlaster Live! Card
D-Link Ethernet card
40 and 80gig Western Digital Hd's.

i called up a local computer store for a packaged deal:
$89 For a Sempron CPU that's 1.9ghz{Athlon XP's go for $100}
$109 for a MSI board
$200 for Sticks of 512mb Micron DDR
they will knock of $25 bucks

my father thinks i should just buy a whole new machine.why would i do that when i have good hardware? i can re-use the soundcard, the HD's and depending if the board has on-board ethernet, i can use the d-link card.

so,what do you guys think?

yeah i kinda figured anything named after japanese food are gonna be crappy.

i'm only gonna upgrade the mobo, memory and CPU. i have a good vid card, soundcard plus 2 good HD's and 2 cd-rom drives,.a legit copy of windows XP home. if the machine was a piece of crap{500mhz K6,256mb of memory,etc...}then i just get a new computer.

build a whole new maching

semprons = yuk
actually, i've heard that Semprons are quite good, and OC like mad...so i don't know who/where you're getting that from

i heard it in the DC forum...from someone who actually bought one.

the only good sempron worth buying is the S754 3100+, and thats not that one.

i don't plan on OCing anything.i gonna head to another comp store and see what packaged deals that store has.

hopefully,he has some Athlon Xp's.maybe a Athlon XP 2.09 or 2.20ghz.

are you opposed to buying over the internet? i would go to newegg.com get a 2400+ 35 watt, and abit nf7 motherboard and whatever ram you want.. the mobo and cpu would be $140 - $160..

or just get the abit nf7, some ddr and keep the duron in there.. my mom's computer has a 1.2 duron and 512 mb of ddr running at 400 mhz.. 1:2 ratio, and it runs great..

how much money do you have to spend, or better yet, are willing to spend?

i'm not opposed to buying online, but i don't have any way of paying for online transactions and my father won't do it cause he thinks this is a waste.

i'm willing to spend $250-$300 for this.you know,re-using the Duron for the time being till i get some more cash wouldn't be a bad idea.i don't know why i didn't think about it,thx for the idea scottatwittenberg.

alright:

1 Stick of Crucial 512mb of DDR 3200 $100 bucks
MSI Delta2 ATX Motherboard $89
Athlon XP CPU $99

the question i have now is this:

1.should i format the computer using the windows XP cd-rom boot option and then install the new hardware

or

2.Install new hardware, then format the machine.

also,another question:

i can re-use my Volcano 7 ThermalTake Fan?.it's say's on the box the Athlon Xp 1800+ is the max it can handle.but the Athlon Xp's come with stock little BS 80mm Heatsinks.

9 times out of 10, you HAVE to re-install Windows when you get a new mobo/proc (usually related to the chipset), so I would BACK EVERYTHING UP, then install new hardware, then format WinXP.

On a semi side-note, I once went from an athlon 2500+ to a p4 2.4... and didn't have to re-install windows... WEIRD!

everything is backed up.from my Pics of Car Shows to my Opera/Mozilla Bookmarks.
my plan is to get the stuff after my dad gets home from work on saturday from the guy and by monday have the machine up and running

i was gonna format the machine anyway cause i messed up the partion sizes of the HD's{made the C: Drive 10gig,i should have made it 20gig} .my next check i'm gonna cash it and then i'll take out another $100.hope everything goes smooth.
