Rebel XT and Sporting Events

Hey guys, jumped into the SLR scene with not much prior knowledge of photography. Ive got the kit lense from the Rebel XT, and i have a Tamron 75-300mm macro AF lense.

Two events coming up for me which i am interested in practicing my photography is a Detroit Red Wings hockey game, and a Rolex Grand Am race series at VIR in VA.

Just looking for some insight and hints from people with this camera who have taken "action" shots from sports/races other to help me work on getting the best from my pictures. I dont expect perfection this time around, but figured 2 events like this will definitely give me a venue to practice. Thanks

I'd say get as close to the action as possible.

High ISO, aperture as open as possible and fast shutter speed... good luck
